GTX 460 SLI Setup Help

I have some issues with my temps going up to 100 degress on the top card of my rig with my fan @100%. two MSI GTX260 Twin Forz

I have a Asus P6T motherboard with three PCIex2.0 slots, 2 of them running @16x and one @4x.

Currently I am using the 2 @16x.

I want to reduce my temps and someone suggested installing the cards one in the 16x and the other on the 4x slot. That way I will have more space between cards and my temps will go down.

Is it possible to do? and
What si the performance lost if I using different rated slots? % wise

I just want to make sure I will not damage by system buy installing a no compatible config.

I want to avoid getting a after market fan.

Thanks

When are your temps getting that high?
During benchmark/Stability test
During heavy Load
During Idle

The GTX 460s run pretty cool I barely even hit 60 while gaming

During stability with OC I hit 82 max and these are the Rear Exhaust models

It sounds like something is wrong with the Heat sink on that card.

What does the second card sit at Usage and temp wise?

I just installed the new Crysis 2 game last night, played a couple of games, my gpu usage when up between 70% to 99% on both cards,

The bottom card temp never when up more than 60 degres but the top card when up to 96-98 degres

Idle temp seems to be ok between 30-45 degress

Ther computer is very well ventilated, I have the Cooler master Scout, top fan and one 120mm side fan.

thanks

I'm sorry I can't speak soley on behalf of air cooled users, but in general 460s don't run that hot. But mine run even betterbeing water cooled. Never goes past 41c. And I OCed both cards. The others that say 60s air cooled is still pretty good too. 460s can get pretty high before youhave to start worrying. I think the temp was like 78c or something. Don't quote me on that temp though.

EDITL By the way, how is Crysis 2? I will get it next week when I get paid.

Game is good, I am very used to black ops, but once I play it more I will enjoy it more (I think)

By the way, what do you need to water cool this cards, parts and price.

Thanks

If you swap the cards around are the temps the same? You can put one of the cards in the x4 slot and it will run fine, there won't be much of an fps drop (if any)

It's the cooler design coupled with the spacing, those types of coolers need some spacing.

You will have a performance hit, when I ran 16/4x it was like running 2 5850s instead of 5870s.

But from what I've seen NV cards don't take the same loss.
How much cooler with the side panel off?

I will swap the cards when I get home.

Now that I remenber, if I switch the card to the x4 slot, the sli bridge will no be long enough. Does SLI work without the bridge for this type of cards.

Thanks

I'll check when I get home, So 98 degrees not a good temp right?

Definitely not, if the gpu is that hot, imagine how hot the other components are.
