Now I live in a town that has zero access to things like that. I have to drive to Vancouver, WA if there is something I want.
I refuse to drive to Portland because the traffic is insane. I thought the 101 was bad during rush hour. Traffic in Portland makes you glad you don't live there 24/7.
I'm sure there are some nice little shops around, but I've honestly never looked. I'll typically buy direct from the label or specialty webshops - fortunately a pair of my favorite labels (tympanik audio & n5md) also run stores where they import things for hardly any profit of their own, so I buy a lot from there. Every once in awhile I'll buy from a user or seller on discogs though for something that I can't find anywhere else.
I haven't bought anything terribly pricey or out of print recently because I've been spending my money on other things...but some of the cds that I have purchased have gone out of print and sellers are charging ridiculous amounts for em - here are some of the more egregious examples:
