wow... to sum it up, i got flamed for a bit for asking if you could use yum with opensuse, and then i said i use debian and they flipped xD ended up getting kick banned lol

i think that is about the WORST distro community i have ever personally experienced...

made me laugh pretty good though

* #SuSE :http://en.opensuse.org/Communicate/IRC
<fler> what is the name of windows live messanger for opensuse?
<v43> use amsn
<twois10> cato: on 11.4, I just plugged in my luks usb and i was given that option. conseder updrading
<v43> is it possible to use yum on opensuse? thought it was, but i havent touched suse in AGES and i heard you are stuck without it
* zuka has quit (Quit: Saliendo)
* raden_work (~jon@66-191-96-74.static.eucl.wi.charter.com) has joined #suse
<twois10> fler, is you open up yast software manager, search for msn, there's an app amsn or something
<microchip_> !zypper @ v43
<SUSEhelp> v43: zypper is the easy to use commandline interface to the YaST (openSUSE PM pattern) package management. See http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Zypper
<Chrysantine> v43: Why the hell would we want to use yum?
<v43> cause its an rpm based distro and yum is what id want to use with rpm package management
* coly (~coly@123.120.155.242) has joined #suse
* Cervajz (~Cervajz@opensuse/member/Cervajz) has joined #suse
<Chrysantine> v43: Too bad. For you.
<inkjetunit> v43, zypper is better
<v43> eh... that sux i guess guess ill have to ask a dev one of these days why on earth they took out yum
<Chrysantine> v43: Because it's useless.
<microchip_> v43: zypper!
* claymore_ has quit (Quit: Leaving)
<tuxlover> v43`: regardlesss of the sying of these gusys i vcan assure you ot is possible to use yum along side with zypper
<v43> thats what i thought, but i keep getting told you cant use yum on opensuse
<twois10> v43: from what I 've gatther many effort were put in to perfect zypper.
<tuxlover> you just have to make sure to disableing zypper
* cato (~cato@cer.xenim.de) has left #suse
<Chrysantine> tuxlover: I should kick and ban you for even suggesting something as stupid as that.
* yejh (~name@58.38.60.88) has joined #suse
<microchip_> tuxlover: yum is not officially supported. yum can mess up things on SUSE. don't come crying if it does
* SeaPhor_ is now known as SeaPhor
* Zeiva (~Zeiva@h18n7-lid-a11.ias.bredband.telia.com) has joined #suse
<NaCl> and why yould you use yum anyway?
* Zeiva has quit (Client Quit)
<microchip_> tuxlover: also, get a clue and use *native* tools, don't try to bastardize SUSE cuz you heard this or that
<cb400f> NaCl: because it's slow python crappage of course
<tuxlover> i use this herar
<tuxlover> here
* yejh has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
<v43> guess ill stick with debian as my main distro will have to toy with opensuse a little though... would feel bad getting my novell CLA and not having used suse in years lol
<tuxlover> you have to make sure zypper is not used at the same time
<NaCl> eh
<Chrysantine> v43: So you're just a troll because Debian wouldn't use yum either.
<NaCl> I found zypper to be superior anyway
* yejh (~name@58.38.60.88) has joined #suse
<microchip_> tuxlover: why are oyu on SUSE? Might just as well go back to Fedora where oyu can use yum in all its glory
<tuxlover> microchip_: i nnever used fedora
<v43> apt-get for debian based distros, yum for redhat based distros i dont like proprietary package managers... two branches is enough
* stittel (~tittel@port-92-201-38-93.dynamic.qsc.de) has joined #suse
* stittel has quit (Changing host)
* stittel (~tittel@unaffiliated/stittel) has joined #suse
* Zeiva|3 (~Zeiva@h18n7-lid-a11.ias.bredband.telia.com) has joined #suse
<microchip_> v43: propriatery? ROFL
<Chrysantine> v43: Shoo back to your troll cave.
* Zeiva|3 has quit (Client Quit)
<tuxlover> microchip_: and waht i am doing with my computer is none of your concerns
<microchip_> idiot
<twois10> it is not proprietary
<NaCl> tuxlover: what?
<v43> what other distro uses it?
<cb400f> and zypper is used by meego and ark linux
<microchip_> tuxlover: trollololol
<cb400f> .. no non-RH distro uses yum..
<tuxlover> microchip_: f**ck yopu
<twois10> proprietary inplicates restriction
<microchip_> tuxlover: bye bye
* microchip_ looks at Chrysantine
<NaCl> aww. the asterisks
<fler> i cant find amsn
* ChanServ gives channel operator status to Chrysantine
* Chrysantine has kicked tuxlover from #suse (Bai bai.)
* Chrysantine removes channel operator status from Chrysantine
<microchip_>
<cb400f> fler: packman repo
<NaCl> fler: pidgin not working?
* l1zard (tuxlover@gateway/shell/bshellz.net/x-vqgxhvusnjmhgtli) has joined #suse
<l1zard> re
<l1zard> so what was this
* Maks|home has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
<Chrysantine> fler: amsn is in the Packman repo.
* l1zard is now known as tuxlover1
* Erikw has quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
<NaCl> oh, hello there
<v43> i like dpkg and apt-get.. rpm and yum are meh but they are redhat standard... opensuse is an rpm based distro, or at least it was last i checked, so it should have the ability to use yum
* omeddragon (~omeddrago@pool-71-178-234-18.washdc.fios.verizon.net) has joined #suse
<fler> ok thanks... i take a look
<NaCl> v43: yes, it uses rpm
<tuxlover1> yeah it is possible to use yum but its not recommended
<NaCl> Once again, why would you want to?
<microchip_> v43: no it should not. Just because RH uses it, doesn't mean we should endorse everything these guys do or use
<v43> cause i dont want to learn another package manager for a distro i dont care about
* SiFuh has quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
<Chrysantine> v43: Then leave.
<cb400f> NaCl: because not only is it slow python crappage.. it also lacks zypp features like patterns
<NaCl> cb400f: isn't that what "metapackages" are for?
<cb400f> if people didn't do idiotic things what would they complain about?
<tuxlover1> NaCl: beacuase you have a server with a central repository for example
<NaCl> and suse doesn't have those?
<microchip_> v43: if oyu don't care, why are oyu here and why you try to bastardize SUSE because some other unrelated distro uses it?
<twois10> then there's no point to the discusion v43
<microchip_> v43: go preach to Mandriva instead
<cb400f> or Ark.. or pclinuxos
<v43> lol i asked if you could use yum on opensuse, not my fault you kids like your distro so much you get offended at the thought of using something that isnt supported by it
* benkevan has quit (Read error: Operation timed out)
<cb400f> or meego
* SiFuh (~SiFuh@ppp59-167-159-94.static.internode.on.net) has joined #suse

* siddharths has quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
<cb400f> :-)
<cb400f> nope, he won't :-)
<Chrysantine> I am so tired of cocky yanks.
* ChanServ gives channel operator status to Chrysantine
<microchip_> haha
* Chrysantine sets ban on *!*@school-ip

If you want a good community, the sabayon community is the best i've ever experienced.

Or OCN
post #5 of 36
Usually questions like that are seen as flamebait/trolls and are usually ignored or flamed. Either way, I'm surprised you actually got banned for it. Not going to say if you came into #archlinux and said the wrong thing, the same wouldn't happen, just there would be no banning.

Most of the support IRC channels are full of stuck up people, but the people who have been there a while will be truly helpful.

you've gotta be ****ting me. did you not read any of the documentation before getting on IRC?

:edit:
and after wasting the time to read the rest of the that you need to keep your statements and opinions moving in a more linear fashion, it hides the troll more effectively

unlike ubuntu, crunchbang, mint, etc (which are all based on debian, so they share a lot with it), opensuse is not based on fedora or redhat, it just uses the RPM...

i dare you next to go into a debian irc or forum and ask if you can run pacman on a debian system, you think suse's people took it hard, debian's community is much worst when it comes to trolling or perceived noobiegoodness.

i probably would've flamed you too if you came here asking the same question but i will try to answer it for you.

simple answer, no, the why, you don't run 2 package managers on the same system unless they communicated with each other and or shared the same "database" for keeping track of installed files/packages...i accidentally once on my laptop installed pacman to my ubuntu install (trying to repair a problem in my arch install), thought i was in the chroot environment, but wasn't...didn't cause problems till i did "pacman -Syu".

uhm... transhour...

yum is rpm... yum is to rpm like apt-get is to dpkg.... o.o

opensuse is an rpm distro...

its not like i was asking anything REALLY out there... im quite confused as to why an rpm distro would all together get rid of yum :/ i think leaving the option sounds appropriate like how debian distros have dpkg and apt-get and aptitude

and documentation usually sux hence why its easier to hop on irc and ask some one lol

also its called i was already on freenode on irc, just join a channel and ask some one in 2 seconds that has the ability to give an intelligent reply (although obviously not willing) instead of search for a SOLID answer for like a half hour lol

EDIT: its just some pissy fanbois for opensuse is all did make me kinda laugh though

The use of zypper/yast has actually been thoroughly discussed, debated, and explained. I'll see if I can find the report I read on it hold on.

you are confusing package management systems with packages containers...

rpm's, deb's, etc, are just containers, that contain the binary files to a application/lib/etc...for the most part, they are often just modified tar files, with special files in them to give extra information about the program (deb files use a "controller" folder for this, don't remember how rpm's do this.)

Quote:
yum is rpm... yum is to rpm like apt-get is to dpkg.... o.o
okay you say you use debian, but i'm beginning to doubt that.

dpkg is a low level package manager, dpkg predates apt by several years...dpkg doesn't do dependency checking, nor can it fetch and install remote deb packages. if you meant "dpkg" for "debian packages", its commonly more accepted to call it a .deb or deb package (as the file extension for such file is .deb). you shouldn't used dpkg to referring to the package itself, as it can cause confusion.

the opensuse folks took your question as trolling, due to the fact they don't see the need to include "yum" since it is the fedora/redhat package manager, zypper is thiers. so you basically "insulted" them, as the package manager IS a major part of the distro...

like i said, go ask in a debian irc or forum, if you can run pacman in your debian system, see the reactions there...

pclinux: use rpm's, but uses apt instead of yum
mandriva: use's rpm's, but not yum, urpmi i believe is their package manager, wonder why they don't use yum either?

^i'm not sure why they don't use yum tbh, but it should be clear, package does not make the distro, its package manager however does...
