Dual NIC mobos - Page 2

both are viable options for servers, but on workstations/home desktops it is not really a viable, not to mention most home networking gear have the capability to take advantage of teaming, load balancing, or failover.

Basically unless you're using teaming, it's only useful for making a network bridge. I use a secondary NIC as a connection for my 360.

About my "ping" test, this was a wrong choice of words. Untangle does not give the "green light" to this third NIC,how Untangle decides to give the "green light" to a NIC may or may not involve some type of variant on a "ping" test. In any case it is internal (meaning not involving an look from the outside in or the in out).If I did try and ping devives connected the NIC without the green light it would fail. Odd thing is, with this NIC that does not get the green light is that it does return a MAC address. Both NIC's are identical NetGear FA311's. I can move them around the failed NIC functions in the slot the working NIC was in. I have Untangle support but they will not support this issue as they tell me to buy a NIC with 2 ports and not try and install two seperate NICS.

The need for the DMZ is not great but if I already have the hardware and it is just a configuration error I am making I would fix it. I kind of suspect if I used a different board for my Untangle I could fill my pci slots and have them recognized,or I could waste a UD3P on an Untangle box. What is motivating me to take a better look is I will finially be getting some data (in the form of images and buttons and controls for webpages that I would not like to lose) so I was going to make a data server and put the website in the DMZ. I could probably arrange for a recovery type policy to get my images back if I lose them for some reason. Or I could just apply standard critical data backup protocols. +rep all

remember the design you are talking about is not the only design for a DMZ available. What you have currently is a Dual-homed DMZ. It is probably one of the easiest to do, but a layered DMZ works just as good. Yeah things are alot easier with multi-port NIC's. Is it the NIc or the motherboard, if the bad NIC works on the good NIC PCI slot that leads me to think it's the board.

I think it is the board also as this board will not run a GX2 in its PCI-e slot. These two issues are unrelated and I present it just to say these Intel DG31PR's(I have two) do not lend themselves to anything much but desktop work. One is working fine with just the one extra NIC (I have not tried the second).

That Gigabyte board I think is major overkill for an Untangled server unless you have a lot of clients. I just downgraded from a G31 Board with an E4500 to a Atom 510 board 2GB and a 2.5 80GB and with no fans. I have actually got an improvement in copying speed. I was copying 1.08TB of Videos from the home server to a USB 2.0 WD My Book and I am getting a constant 22MBs. I used to get 10MBs.

Well if you picked up a Intel 525 board use 1 nic in the PCI slot and then get a mini PCI-e gigabit ethernet adapter for your 3rd card. Although that probably more then a dual nic card but it would be cool and very low power.
