Question about i7-960 OC

Hey guys,

Just wondering what CPU temps I should expect to see with an overclocked i7-960 at around 4.0GHz. My current CPU cooler is faulty and I'm still waiting on the replacement, so I haven't been able to measure an accurate temperature reading. I've had to stop Prime95 after about 3mins because core temps shooting up to 99-100 Celsius.

I'll be using the Thermalright Silver Arrow CPU cooler (unless you guys can recommend a better one for the LGA 1366). I'll be upgrading to a custom liquid cooling system in the next couple of months, but for now I need a good CPU cooler that will allow me to overclock.

So should I be looking towards the mid 80s at full load with an air cooler?

Also, I has anyone had any luck hitting 4.2-4.4GHz stable with the 960?

The temperatures will really depend on your vcore, and that depends on your chip. I haven't seen too many 960s around since everyone who OCs really chooses 920s 930s and occasionally 950s. With some good fans on your silver arrow, you should see temps of 80 for up to 1.35vcore.

Yea, I originally wanted the i7-2600k but I built this system during the Sandy Bridge recall so I had to opt for the X58. Decided to go with the 960 because I hadn't planned on doing any overclocking.

So are temps of around 80 safe at full load? From what I've gathered, you want around 30 Celsius on idol, and around 65-75 Celsius at full load. But I'm not sure. I'm new to all of these. I just don't want to damage any of my components when I let Prime95 run FFTs for 8hrs.
