Advice on sound card (gaming and headset)

Thread Starter
Hello

As I am building a new computer soon I am (ofc) getting a sound card as well. I play a lot of FPS games, so sound is very important to me. Pretty much use the computer for gaming, will say around 95%. I will be using the Sennheiser PC350 for sound.

Here are the sound cards I can choose from:
Page 1 and Page 2

From what I have read my best choices would be:
1. Asus Xonar Essence ST
2. Asus Xonar Essence STX
3. Asus Xonar D2X

I will be using this on a Gigabyte P67 UD7 motherboard with 2 x GTX 580. So hope it will fit fine. As for OS I will be using Win 7.

So I am pretty much wondering what would be the best bet for my needs?

Thanks in advance

CREATIVE SOUND BLASTER X-FI TITANIUM HD on Page 2. It's a great card for someone with 95% FPS gaming needs. Asus is great for sound quality in every other manner including other types of gaming, but when it comes to getting the most advantage from gaming, the Titanium HD proves pretty worthy.

I have a PCI version of the X-Fi Platinum. It's been good, aside from one glaring, unavoidable problem....Creative's drivers. I've had a Creative card in my system since 2002 (Audigy Platinum then), and drivers were less buggy. The problem is that Creative seldom updates. I can find modified drivers, but those don't seem to be updated often, either. Because of this I actually yanked the X-Fi out of my system, and will deal with onboard. The other thing I've noticed, between multiple X-fi cards (PCI and PCI-E) is a background hiss/sizzle, including through the front panel.

Maybe look into an Auzentech if you want X-fi. The Asus cards have also had good reviews, although I've not tried them. If you're not needing surround, then maybe look into an M-Audio stereo card, meant for recording (very clean sound).

Keep looking around, but don't just jump on the Creative bandwagon.

You bought an STX and headphones that don't make use of the amp. Way to go

I got the stx because I had a frys gift card so the card was only 75 bucks out of my pocket and it was the the best card they had out of the choices, and why would I buy headphones that require an amp when about 30% of the time I'm going to be using them with my iPhone? And the rest of the time music and games on my computer.
And like I said creative blows with there drivers witch is why I got rid of my Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro

Now you're 75 bucks out of pocket and have virtually the same sound card as a Xonar DX which you could have had for free thanks to your gift card +some money on your gift card left over.

STX uses the same chip as the Xonar DX. Only reason it's more expensive is because of the built in amp it has which you're not even using.

See what I mean?

Another new system built and i have used the CREATIVE SOUND BLASTER X-Fi TITANIUM PCIE and am very happy with it-no probs with drivers-or quality-so far everything from gameing-to movies to music works great. Paired it with the new sound blaster sigma gameing head set completely pleased with both.

i can see the point your trying to make but the way i see it is i spent less then what a DX costs for a card that later down the road i have the option of buying better cans that require more power to drive with out haveing to buy a amp.
All in all im happy with the choice i made

I have also heard that Creative cards have problems with drivers.

From what I understand the cards I linked to earlier are rated as follow: Asus Xonar Essence ST > Asus Xonar Essence STX > Asus Xonar D2X. The only problem is I am not sure this is the same for gaming. Hope someone can clear things up and help me pick the right card for my needs.
