590 is faster according to TPU: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GeForce_GTX_590/23.html

The forum sticky here agrees: http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-general/502403-graphics-card-ranking-5th-time-last.html

Speed is pretty close either way, but never trust Charlie/Semi Accurate ;p

Honestly it doesn't matter one tiny iota. They are pretty close and very people will ever buy this card.

The consensus overall, and from the big sites like Anandtech, is that the HD6990 is the faster card. Its sad when people try to spin things without even owning stock in a company.

Anand also said that the HD6990 tends to do better in more modern, demanding games, which they supposed would mean it will perform better on games coming down the pipeline.

That being said I will reiterate what I said, even at 2560x1600 I am doing just fine with my flashed 6950. Scaling has come a long way but I still don't like dual gpu solutions, whether single card or not.

And you know what, one more thing, Charlie has done a LOT of good reporting in the tech field and its sad that people attack him so much. It started with bumpgate, which he was 100% on the nose with and one of the first to report it, and a lot of people who believed that Nvidia could do no wrong started attacking Charlie and it has never stopped.

No, it's not. They're the same speed at 1920x1200, and the Radeon HD 6990 is 4% faster at 2560x1600, the target resolution. At 5760x1200, the gap grows to around 10% faster.

So from all your answers I came to the conclusion that hd6990 is now the fastes gfx card.
This is for the second consequtive year AMD produced the fastest gfx card(hd 6990 in 2011,hd5970 in 2009-10)in the market.
Its a great success for AMD.
But atleast there is a mind satisfaction among nvidia fans that gtx590's price is around the same price of hd6990.
Generally nvidia gpu tends to have higher price than amd gpu

Id go 6970xfire or 570sli before I would touch these.

If anyone goes and looks at the reviews and does not cherry pick certain graphs from 1 review out of 10 you will see that the 590 is not all that against the (stock)6990. Seems to be the general opinion of the reviewers on a whole.
And it cannot overclock without melting down(exaggeration).

Go 570sli.

They can't price it higher if it performs worse. People often don't seem connect to the two. The reason Nvidia has had higher prices for years? Their cards performed better and they could afford to charge more. I love what AMD has been doing since the HD4000 series, don't get me wrong, but Nvidia had a good 4 years of domination before that.

Isn't that exactly what the sources I linked show? It's easy to say all that and omit the part where its faster overall across all resolutions lol.

People pick TPU for a reason, they test the most programs/games and keep a comprehensive chart at the end. You can look at something like [H]OCP and see a very different picture since they usually test like 3 games and thats it.

Either way, like I said they're both very close. But overall, the 590 is ahead by a hair. However the absurdly loud fan noise from the 6990 would push me towards the 590 before I ever let such a miniscule performance differential sway my decision.

The sun shines on a dogs ass every once and a while too. More often than not, you go back and read his articles and end up laughing at things like this:

"The 580 is still going to be obscenely huge, and, well, it won’t be enough to beat the competition. Heck, it won’t be enough to beat the current champ, AMD’s HD5970/Hemlock, much less the upcoming Cayman and Antilles parts. It is going to be a slaughter."
