Sata2, sata3?

Thread Starter
Excuse my ignorance but are these simply another way of saying that certain SSD's (or HDD's) fit into the designated SATA 3.0gb/s or the SATA 6.0gb/s on a motherboard?

oh and is there a difference between the two besides what ports they go in?

Sata 2 (3Gb/s) and Sata 3 (6Gp/s) use the exact same connectors and the exact same cables. However a Sata 3 SSD connected to a Sata 3 port on the motherboard will produce faster speeds than any combination involving Sata 2.

But the cables, and connector shapes are the exact same.

So it is a complete waste to buy lets say Vertex 3 or c400 for MB with SATA II port?
it would run at a slower data rate, it may be noticeably slower, but it may not depends on your usage if you're going to upgrade your motherboard later then its probably not a waste.

As far as I understand, you may be not able to hit top sequential speeds but your random small read/write speeds will be intact unless that too saturates the interface. Could some one confirm?
