my 9800GX2 has 1 missing resistor on the back can i just take one off a broken router or something and solder it on the 9800?

Yes. The hard part......do you know the exact resistance/wattage/package size of the resistor that broke off?

Chances are slim the your broken router has a resistor that is the exact same resistance/wattage/package size as the one the fell off.

Ordering a resistor is cheap. Why bother taking on off your router? About $0.01 to $0.20 each.

Edit: Have you been running it with the resistor off? If you have, then you might need to replace more than just a resistor. We can use a micrometer to find the package size. We can guess the wattage. Finding out what the resistance needs to be is gonna be a *****.

NO NO! You don't know if that resistor is the same as the broken one. Either check the broken one (if you still have it and can clearly see all the stripes) or look up a diagram of the PCB. Then get another resistor with the same stripes/color codes and solder it on.

the one on the router looks identical to the ones on the 9800 so that's why i was asking

Surface mount does not have stripes. It usually has tiny numbers or no label at all.

Finding a diagram of the PCB is probably not practical. I have been digging around for reference schematics. I'm not sure Nivdia releases these to the public.

EDIT: Is the broken resistor surface mount or through hole?

"Looks the same" is not good enough. YOu can have multiple resistors of the same package, with different resistances. Yeah. Take a picture of the broken resistor if you still have it. Take a picture of the PCB if not.

1.) That's surface mount. So it will likely have no stripes
2.) You probably won't be able to find a schematic BUT if you can get another member of OCN with a 9800GX2 to take a mufti-meter to that same resistor, they can measure what the resistance is suppose to be! yay!
3.) Do you have a pair of calipers that measure is metric? These are useful to find the package size. Here are standard package sizes. http://www.interfacebus.com/resistor_table.html

EDIT: Both PCB's are the same? Then your in luck. Just measure the still attached resistor with a multimeter. You can get a multimeter at your local Radio Shack for about $10. Also you can borrow one from just about anyone who has worked with electronics.
