Who said anything about believing in unicorns, when i was posting some "live" specs and findings about the 590, while i was talking with a friend of mine that was testing the card?

ehehehe... oh well ...

It's a good card ... but ... seriously ... made me more confuse ... is the freaking VRM design a bull-s*** ? Are reviewers just getting too enthusiastic with voltages?

Gear mentioned in this thread:

These idiots blew it at 1.2v...... WTH did they expect was going to happen?

Linus Tech Tips got 809/1618/2120 @ 1.05v.

I haven't the slightest why anyone was trying to pump 1.2v into it....

Black, but for what i've been reading through the web, it's not only overclocking fail ... they are blowing at default for what it seems ...

But... i had the 590 ordered and i just canceled that to see where this goes ...

That shouldn't cause it to blow up. It seems the 590 and 570 share something in common though: poor VRM design. Unless you need 3 580s, I'd def say go with the 6990.

Will MSI release a proper 590? Only MSIAlex knows!
From good sources ( that friend that i talked about who tests cards for msi and asus ) ... no, MSI will not do any "lightning" version of the GTX590
post #1476 of 1505
Just wait for the non-reference designs for the 590 to come out if you are planning on getting one. I still think its a better product than the 6990 and has a lot more potential once a 590 with custom cooler/vrm come out. The fact that the 590 can stand toe to toe with the 6990 at underclocked(580 speeds/stock 590) speeds is a testament to how much better Nvidia truly is.

According to NVIDIA this should not happen. In their official reviewer driver (which I used), the NVIDIA Power limit is designed to be active for all applications, not only Furmark.
So did he go over the power limit because his reviewer drivers weren't working properly? If so, then we'll have to see if they can reliably OC with stable drivers next.
I thought people were able to disable the power limiter on 6990s and they didn't blow up though.

Do you expect anything different from that scenario?

Dare you to try that with a 6990 and youtube it, too.
Hi i would like you to meet the 6990 overclocks

The overclocks of our card are 910 MHz core (10% overclock) and 1525 MHz Memory (22% overclock). I was quite surprised to see that much overclocking potential on the HD 6990. An extra 10% on the GPU, that directly translates into extra heat, is very respectable. The memory overclock is good too, but memory overclocking typically does not add that much heat, so the results here are about the same as on a single GPU card.

So i fail to see your argument. It has been tried it works. Again if you need 2 gpus in one card go 6990, if you need raw power go sli 580 gtx. There is no reason to pick up this strange basement dwelling cousin of a card.

The thing is though, are there going to be non-reference cards coming out?

I'd love to see a TF3 590.
