The real competiton for 580 SLI is 6990+6970 in Tri-Fire, 1000$ against 1000$. I'm not alone thinking that. Here's what Brent the 6990 reviewer at HardOCP had to say about the subject:

http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=...9&postcount=24

''During the second day of testing 6990 near launch time, it hit me that Tri-Fire is really the competition for 580 SLI and that we need to test it. So it has always been on our minds, since before launch, to test Tri-Fire. We will get to it''

And with early beta drivers, a 6990+6970 is already raping 580 1.5gb SLI. Just search for those reviews. I have already post them.

And you don't see the fanboys who said I was wrong and ''FAIL so HARD, 3 GPUs agianst 2 GPUs! blah blah blah'' in HHardOCP flame someone from the staff. No. Too afraid to get banned. Bunch of little girls hidding behind a keyboard.

Accept it. 6990+6970 IS 580 SLI 1.5gb competition, and it's simply raping it.

''Deal with it'' (imagine a gigantic childish dog taking half a page in lame 8 bits wearing black glasses in here).
That's actually an epic fanboi strategy you got there man. Can't compare SLI to Crossfire because the price differs between crap and premium so stick another one in there and make it Tri-fire Vs. Dual-SLI. How win is that yo?! Next time some fool tries to mess with me and trash talk my Corvette saying his multiples Civics own me for the amount of car for price, I'm gonna completely ditch all logic and jump on the "keepaddingcraponcrapuntilitcan matchpremiumprice" bandwagon Zomg! 0.0 I excite now!

We have a beta 590 in the office, it's quiet...Far quieter than the 6990's...

I'm biased, blatantly biased, though; so might as well wait for the unboxing and the DB readings.

I'm not saying that it isn't loud, but the fan is of a different design than those of the other reference Nvidia and ATi cards.

I honestly just can't wait for both sides of the fence to start defending how their cards are better once we actually see results. We've already seen what the 6990 "fanboys" have stated.

I wonder if it will be quieter than this when overclocked?

Define "Quiet", please.

Thermodinamically it is impossible than that fan is "quiet" while sinking 375W in concept of heat.

Edit: Of course, I'm refering to absolute sould levels, not compared to HD6990 (I know it is a ****load of loud)

I hate going off-topic, but whatever "posts" you've read about this were severely ill-informed. 2x 5870s won't go anywhere near maxing out a 750W, OC'd or not.

Well, like I said, we have a beta so, things may have changed and I'm not really allowed to give you specs yet so, I'll define it the best that I can, fairly.

Using the base of the 6990 audibly, as it ramps up...I'd say it's about as 2/3 as loud. If I put the 6990 fan on 70% and the 590 on 100%, they're about equal.

I'm not an expert, I don't claim to be an expert, I don't claim to know of any changes they have made, however, in my opinion, the vapor chamber is helping keep this card "noticibly quieter" than the 6990s.

That's as much as I can say.

I will be switching to the 590 as a liquid solution will be available in a few weeks.

That's just me.
