Trying to replace/upgrade caps on 295GTX. Help

There is only one caps (one on each on each PCB board) for my BFG 295GTX. Obviously RMA is not an option so I was hoping someone could help me out. Ive done dome soldering but I have not replace a cap before.

I want to do it because I can hear some pretty loud noise coming from the graphics card, I assume its coming from a capacitor, so I figure one or both of them need to be replaced.

If the question is "should you do it" then the answer is probably yes if it's a part about to fail. After it fails it can take down with it other components and make a mess of everything. Still you should check in as much detail as possible what is the part that whines; it can be a capacitor, but can also be a coil (they make a sound more like a buzz than a whine); my advice is not to change more than you have to unless you're very good with soldering - paths are very slim and you risk shorting something if you don't have a sure hand.

Caps are made to be replaced though, right? Replacing a cap is not too difficult is it?

Depends where it is, what type it is, and how big it is, but i've replaced capacitors on mobos before without too much hassle.

One word of warning, you REALLY should get a thermostatic soldering iron - cheap soldering irons get too hot and you risk heating up the tracks and damaging other components.

You also obviously need a very fine point on the iron.

edit: and no, i'm not 100% sure they are 'made to be replaced'

Ive already looked at the caps, they are big and theres not really any other components too close to them to be at risk of being damaged. The caps have these numbers:

Cap 1:
903
SVP
180
16

Cap 2:
907
SVP
180
16

What do the numbers mean? I assume its voltage/wattage?

From the numbers they would be 180 ohm 16v caps, 16V are usually at the input of the phases.
If they are just making noise I would leave them, the original caps can put up a pretty good fight trying to get them off a board, that rohs solder they use is not very iron friendly.

Well its just noise but its pretty loud sometimes, and I think it got louder recently. If I switch to a low res then the noise gets even louder.

Yes it would, good catch, was just making coffee as I was reading & posting in the thread here.

OP, if you have a dead board around maybe try removing a cap off it to get a feel for how easy/not easy it is, & see if you want to go ahead on the 295.
I usually use some braid to remove as much of the solder as I can, then use a fat tip on the iron to push down on the legs as they heat up while pulling the cap from the other side as it loosens up.
Putting a new cap in is the easy part with fresh solder.
