Depends what you are looking for. The GTX 460 is much more friendly on your power bill. What made my decision was the fact that ATi cards typically scale a little better than nvidia cards so if I wind up needing more performance i know i can drop another card in and get a substantial gain.

Radeon HD 6950
$200 after $20 Rebate and Promo Code HARDOCPX323A $15 off
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161361

Even an AMD 6850 beats a GTX 460. 6870 is win but get the deal on the 6950, unlock it to a 6970 with BIOS flash.

Look here for Graphics ranks reference

Go for a good deal on a 560 or 6950 like those posted by trulsrohk.

If you go 6870 or 460 check out the open box section. Both are in there all the time. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814102913R

Can the 1GB card be unlocked to 6970 specs? I thought only the 2GB cards unlocked.

now there are a bunch of different brands of the same cards (i.e.: sapphire, msi, his, xfx) and they are all differently priced... is there a reason? is it like brand name vs generic?

Usually not alot of difference. Some brands have better warranty, some are known for better customer service, etc..

The big difference you will see is the reference vs nonreference pricing. Reference are all made by AMD or Nvidia and then XFX, Asus etc. just slap their stickers on them. These usually hold their prices longer. Non-reference cards vary alot. Some are better, but sometimes corners start being cut to save costs too.

....so far no one has bothered to ask...

What are your specs?

Will there be a PSU issue or CPU bottleneck?
