It's SATA. You do not need an IDE cable for that.

You must be young. IDE cables were called IDE cables before the advent of SATA cables. Then after SATA became the "norm", the IDE cables were then called PATA cables.

If you have an IDE/PATA device, more likely a IDE CD/DVD drive, then you must use an IDE cable. (Sorry I am old school, I call them IDE). You will also use a Molex connection for power.

If you have a SATA based HDD, or Blu-Ray/DVD, you must use a SATA cable, and a SATA power connector.

hmm, ok then I have another question. I haven't checked the cables on my modular PSU yet, but would I be correct in assuming that the SATA cables I would use to connect from my HDD to my motherboard can also be used to connect my HDD to my PSU?

not that hard to understand or forget. nicely said

IDE cables are really old now the hard drives will probably die in a few days of use by now..

just get a SATA hard drive their dirt cheap now.

NO!
The SATA (data) cables look like this [══╗]
the SATA power cable plug is longer, and has 4 wires (red/blk/blk/yellow)
