Build assistance please? :3

Hello Fellow Humans!

I've asked for your advice a few months back and I've received good responses. Now I'm back for more. Here's what we've got:

CPU:
Phenom II X4 955 BE

HDD:
WDC Caviar Blue 500gb

MoBo:
Asrock 890GX Extreme3

PSU:
Cooler Master (GX Series) 80PLUS 550watts

RAM:
CORSAIR Vengeance 4GB

VidCard:
Sapphire HD 6870

Casing

Thermaltake V4 Black Edition
Question:

- Considering that I will not be OC-ing in a while, is 550 watts enough/too much/crap?

Please be brutal but not discouraging! XD Thank you!

PS: the links go to Newegg for reference purposes only; I won't be getting the stuff from them.

Buy this RAM with low timings, cause the one you chose is very very generic.

And throw that crappy excuse for a PSU and buy a real one, like this. Or this one if you'd like to buy something cheaper.

Also, that WD Blue drive is pretty cruddy compared to the Spinpoint F3

Other than that, you're good to go. I hope I wasn't discouraging, I tried to be brutal xD

should be enough for now, but once you start overclocking, you're gonna need a new one. the phenom ii chips pull quite a bit of wattage when overclocked, not sure about the 6870 though. i'd imagine you'll need a 650w psu for overclocking current setup, and 750w for crossfire
post #4 of 12
Sapphire HD 6870 @250W full load
Power= voltage x current
Current = Power / Voltage
Current =250W / 12V= 20.83A on the 12V+ rail needed
[your power supply has 44A so its done easy]

550W total - 250W(graphics) -100W(cpu) -20W(fans) =180W left over.

Done easy mate, that psu is perfectly fine

Please do yourself a favor and not buy that coolermaster PSU......

Also, AMD suggests a 500w for a single 6870 and 750w for crossfire dual

That mobo is actually out of stock
Assuming you do still want 8x-8x Crossfire at the same price, you could try ASUS M4A79XTD EVO... no SATA3/USB3 but it supports 8x-8x and is at a great price. Try a combo deal perhaps?

He's not buying from newegg. He's just using it for reference. Although you're right with the M4A79XTD EVO

wow. almost same exact build as mine. the sapphire 6870 is a BEAST byw. seriously.

ive been playing max settings, max AA, max everything since i bought it. 60 fps

the 955 BE is also a beast. and comes with a pretty good heatsink with copper base and piping.

and if you really want some performance... RAID 0!! or RAID 1+0, thats what im bout to do

EDIT.
and the 6870 has 2nd gen direct x 11 and tessellation support. (prepares you for the future ;] )

the ram you link is nearly twice the price for the sake of tighter timings, which outside of benchmarking you would likely never notice, hell even in memory benching it doesn't make a whole lot of difference.

That PSU is perfectly fine for what you need, I personally would be tempted to go up to a 750 to allow you to go crossfire in the future, but regardless, check reviews some cooler-master psu's are good some are junk.

What case are you going to be using?

@Tryagain
- Brutal enough and not close to discouraging. Thanks for the thoughts.
Of all things to get iffy on the info on, why the hell PSU?? /rant.

@erik &Dr216
- I don't think I'll be doing Crossfire anytime soon..

@Jump3r
- Thanks for the math! 8D 550w should suffice then.

@XD
- You've suggested that mobo on my last thread. The supplier I'm getting the stuff from doesn't have it though.

With regard to the Casing, I'm thinking of getting this:

Thermaltake V4 Black Edition
