Anti Aliasing question 6970

Thread Starter
I just installed my brand new XFX 6970, and I noticed that I could only get up to 8XAA. Is this normal? I could have sworn I could get my 8800GT to atleast 16, and I think 32XAA.

Just wondering what is up with that. Will a second 6970 give me more AA options?

There's nothing above 8XAA in catalyst for ATI ( and sincerely there's no point for more if you have a 1080p monitor ) .

There's morphological AA that is awesome and can saves you TONS of FPS from AA when you need more FPS in a game and is good only at or below 1200p after that it just take a dump on your FPSs

OH AND 1000 POSTS YAY!!!

You can change the "quality" of AA in ccc but it doesn't even matter if you're gaming at 1080p or around that.

Thanks, just curiousu as to why ATI only can get up to 8x, when my old 8800gt was able to get atleast 16. I have noticed the huge performance increases in RE5, DMC4, SC2, and both crysis games. I can run them all at max settings, in some cases with AA, and get 60ish FPS. Super happy. Add that with a low voltage 2500k (4.6GHZ 1.35V) and I am really happy. What settings should I have in CCC? new to the red team, hard to understand this stuff as I never had to mess with anything for my 8800GT.

EDIT: I was surprised to see minecraft utilizing 100% of my GPU, may be due to the 128X graphic mod and DOF shaders i was running but still, thats crazy for a java game.

Just set them all to default and it should be fine (3D settings that is).

I'd stay away from morphological AA - it's a fast and dirty form of AA that, in my experience, blurs things really noticably.

I'm sure there are loads of threads on here explaining all the different forms of AA, but you can turn on edge detect which will effectively sample 24x intelligently.

Surface format optimisation (another weird and wonderful ATI thing) just converts 64-bit floating point calculations into 32-bit to make them faster to process, but I've never seen it make a difference to either quality or framerate (probably because not many games use fp16 calcs?).

Other than that all the other ati settings are self explanatory

Change the AA Filter to "Edge Detect."

Edge Detect filter on:
4x AA = 12xAA
8x AA = 24xAA

There is no 2x Edge Detect AA.
