Going from a Q6600 @ 3.0 ghz to 2500k

Thread Starter
I'm thinking of upgrading my CPU 6600 B3 @ 3ghz to a 2500k. I'm mostly gaming, some WoW, BF BC2, Starcraft 2, Total war series and eventually BF3.

Would I see a huge difference? I noticed a thread in here which a owner went from a clocked 9650 to a 2500k and saw huge difference so. If so what MB RAM and cooler would be a good choice? Oh and I would overclock it too.

Thanks in advance

lol I made the same jump except my q6600 was at 3.5 ghz. The difference was night and day in the games I play. Aion and Tera online, granted both are very cpu dependent. You will see large increases in MMO's for sure!

yea, you would notice an increase in games, specially WoW and similar CPU biased games.

get a dual channel kit so like 2x2gb for 4gb, should be a good kit. Gskill kits are my favorite, good pricing, good RAM.

if you got the budget, do it.

Yes I have the budget, I just hope it would be a futureproof upgrade, the Q6600 is the longest ive had a CPU, i only upgraded GPU in between. You think 2500k would manage the same ?

Do you find the Q6600 lacking? If so, do it. If not, wait for hexacores and try to squeeze a bit more out of your Q6600 OC. I'm not saying the 2500k won't be better, it sure will. Just my opinion, I don't think moving from a Quad to another Quad is a great investment, unless the Q6600 just isn't cutting it. You have a nice Mobo and GPU, so they aren't limiting you at all. Figured its $400-500 for the chip, Mobo and RAM. Will moving to another Quad give you $500 worth of performance improvement in games? That's asking a lot. Just my opinion. . If you have money to blow, go for it. It will be a nice setup for a while to come.

i did exactly this - went from a Q6600 B3 @ 3.0 to an i5-2500K and my framerate essentially doubled in BC2. it's one of the few games that i know of where you'd see such a substantial increase. Black Ops was another.
