Of course there's alot of exaggeration, both ways. That's just how people are, and the internet in particular everyone wants to maket things black and white.

The funniest to me is the BFBC2 thing. You'd think it's unplayable on anything but an overclocked Sandy Bridge when you hear ***** on OCN. Think of what a small percentage of BFBC2 players would have the technical ability to build an overclocked SB, or the money to buy one from a boutique builder.
I completely understand what you mean.

Just one thing, I'd drop that C2Q requirement down to 3-3.2Ghz with a decent GPU. I proved BC2 can be played with high FPS @ 3.2Ghz and a decent GPU.

Where's your FPS?

Ok, I admit, my FPS might be lower than 80 in that spot. I dont know what it is about that view, but that is the only time I have low FPS. That is a cherry picked location and you know it.

I already went down this road in the long "BC2 double FPS" thread. Screenshots showing FPS just dont mean anything.

I'm curious what FPS you had in BlackOps and BC2 before and after.
i agree, that's one of the 'tough' spots in Black Ops. before/after fps:

Black Ops:
Q6600 @ 3.0: ~60 fps avg, 30's min (like the location pictured)
2500K @ stock: ~91 fps avg (frame cap), 80's min (the same 'tough' spots)

Bad Company 2:
Q6600 @ 3.0: ~50 fps avg, 30's min
2500K @ stock: ~100 fps avg, 70's min

both games were certainly playable on the Q6600. It was just an annoyance when my framerate plummeted because i was trying to shoot someone down that corridor in Black Ops, or a building was crumbling down near me in BC2. i played the hell out of both games on the Q6600 and it was just fine. i'm not preaching to anyone that's running LGA775, as if they must upgrade to enjoy their games. i'm just giving my experience, without bias or sugarcoating.

also, these two games are outliers in the current market. no other games i own have had such a significant improvement. that's not to say that more aren't on the horizon, just how it stands at the moment.

I guess I am lucky not to experience the firing lag a lot of people get in BlackOps. So weird that game plays great for a lot and flat out bad for others. Like I said, my Q6700 clocked at 3.2Ghz and I can still maintain 80-100fps steadily. Hell, I can peak around 200fps sometimes. No lag drops at all really. In BO, I don't see much change beyond 3Ghz. Actually, it even plays well at stock 2.66Ghz. I can't explain why 2 similar systems don't perform equally, but it sure boggles my mind.

I'm hanging on to my Q6600 for a while longer. Personally, I only upgrade when my current gear is no longer cutting it. Once FPS dips under the 30's I look for upgrades, but not until then. If my Q6600 lasts another year (which I expect it will), great, more money in my pocket. If it lasts longer than that, even better. If it isn't cutting it 6 months from now, well then I'll upgrade.

On my Q6600 @ 3.2, BFBC2 stays around 50 FPS, dips to like 35 FPS in spots, but it's still perfectly playable. Most other games are up in the 50s-60s constantly, and that's just fine for me.

Thanks for the replies. The thing is BFBC2 works pretty good only dips to 30-40 ish sometimes, but I don't see much improvement in my fps going from the 4890 to 6950, and black ops is virtually the same, dips to 30-35 in some areas of most maps doesnt matter what res i play at. What else will come in the horizon otherwise? I wanna be ready for BF3 when it releases , maybe I can squeeze some more out of the q6600 but im already reaching 60-68 c in realtemp as it is now during some games.

Needed a new computer for the family, went from a Q9550 @3.6 to a i2500 was only about a 2 second gain on superpi. Pretty meaningless. Biggest improvement is boot time, amazing how fast the uefi SB MB's can boot windows. Also the power savings is significant if you don't bypass all the throttlings features. Biggest letdown is PCI, its not native anymore and basically useless for anything with complex drivers (read good soundcards). Also watch out for the USB3 implementation, doesn't work with a lot of USB2 devices. Another thing to consider is some LGA775 MB's don't have the full ACHI implementation and SSD performance should in theory be better with a Sandy Bridge.

But as far as pure CPU power, I don't know what Intel has been doing for 3 years, 10% super pi improvement is pretty dissapointing.

If I didn't need a new computer right when I did, it would have made a lot more sense to wait. Also I am one of the outcasts that don't trust all these high voltage overclocks people are throwing at the SB cpu's, time will tell how much damage is being done to the silicone.

The thing is its a B3 stepping and I think it's running quite hot already when gaming, what are good temps for it? I noticed realtemp shows higher temps than coretemp, which one is trustworthy? But I'm gonna try getting it a bit past 3.0 when I get off work

All these threads about people upgrading from their Q6600's makes me want to also. Thing is I don't want to spend a grand on a new PC just about now.

Q6600 should last me at least another year before I upgrade my GPU.
