Which card to get for eyfinity.

Thread Starter
I am looking at the 6970 and the 6950.

Thing is I dont know which one to get for 3 screens running 1920x1080p.

I also need the cards you post to be reference design so I can buy the full cover water block and not have surprises that the water block wont fit because the card is not reference design.

I was also looking at the 5870 with 6 output so i can eventually do 6 screen eyefinity. or should i wait for the next card that does 6 screen eyefinity.

Please note I dont want to use the daisy chaing method. just want to hook up my monitors directly to the card via dvi and or display port to dvi active adapter.

So what do you guys recommend. Again my ultimate goal is to have 6 screens running eyefinity and note that I only have 1 pci-x16 slot.

so adding a second card is out of the question. Budget is $500 greenbacks.

thanks

as far as i can see, only 5970 4gb from XFX will suit your request:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150500

this monster card comes with 6 onboard mini display ports.

however, the price may not be within your budget......

yeah 9 bills wow i sure know how to pick one. So I am assuming the 5870 with the 6 ports is not even worth mentioning compare to the 6970 huh. I either get 6 outputs for a reasonable amount of cash but sacrifice performance. Or get the performance for eyefinity 3 and get the performance but loose the extra 3 i wanted to get huh.

well with that said which cards are reference design for water cooling then. I am searching and finding lots non reference like does xfx any reference cards anymore it seems they go non reference with their cards. but i like their warranty that allows you to water cool them and junk and not void warranty.

To run eyefinity on 6 screens you will either need to daisy chain displayport screens or buy an e6 card no other way, as for the screens to work together in a eyefinity display group they must all be connected up to the same graphics card.

Single 5870 e6 were going cheap recently depending on the game and how high you want to crank your AA you may find a single one of these cards will do, With no AA everything else maxed I was getting 90+fps in mw2 on a single card @5769x1080p

check benchmark figures but really there isnt that big a jump between a 6970 and a 5870 until you start cross-firing them or pumping lots of tesselation.

To go to 6 screens is a completely different animal though cant really achieve it on a budget : /

My single 5870 can run games fine at 5760x1080, though pushing to six screens would more than likely be pushing to far

Oh Just remembered bear in mind if you do go for 5870 e6 cards they are not truly "reference" they have extra ram modules on the rear of the card, however I believe EK full water blocks fit fine but research it yourself a little first, I went for big air coolers in the end over water so didn't follow it through to the end.

You are pretty limited with buying 1 card for 6 screens as mentioned. Is your $500 budget for a video? if so, the only thing that comes close is dual 6950's (which you motherboard doesn't support). If you only plan on GAMING on three monitors, then a 5870 w/2gb RAM would be fine for the most part. But, if your end goal is to game on 6 monitors, then I would start looking into more than just a video card.

explain?

Well yeah gaming would be on 3 screens and then create another group and use that for watching news broadcast while gaming or doing work.

So for now yeah 3 screen will be used for games and work.

Later on i would use one group for work and the other group for watching news, stocks, and current events.

Also would set up different profiles one for work, gaming, browsing the web.

So i think the 5870 x 6 would be a good fit huh. As far as gaming what differences if any are between the 5 series cards and the 6 series cards

like I read something about dx11 being different on the 6 series cards such as AA being different i could be way off but there are some changes right
