I actually like the 2.3 keyboard more than swype, its much better than the old stock keyboard, if you want swype though you can go to swypes site and sign up for the beta.

yup, glad it all worked out. I personally think 2.3 is wayyy better than 2.2.

Are there any special advantages of 2.3 that I need to know how to make use of? Or is it just generally faster?

It's just generally faster with much better ram management and much better battery management. These 2.3 roms however are still somewhat beta so battery life and the few kinks still there should be worked out in later releases. I personally have seen my battery life get better with each new version of aosps rom. Plus there are the cool new ui changes like the edge glow and the on/off animations.

Yea there is also the battery usage has been improved. The keyboard, and colors have been improved also. FM Radio just got re enabled on my Optimus One. There are also Profiles but I don't know if they are completely working.
