[EN] NVIDIA's dual-GPU GeForce GTX 590 emerges, can't slay the Radeon HD 6990 titan - Page 22

I mean seriously these cards are stupidly fast. I would not be able to visually see any diffrence in games over my 570 as that is already over kill for 1920x1080.
Software and games has ALOT of catching up to do, gpu's are steaming ahead and the gap is only getting bigger. 99% of pc users would find these cards useless over a card that cost less than half as much of these two new offerings.

We overclockers are a mere minority compared to all the people who actually game on pc's around the world so apart from e-peen i see no reason why the rest of the world would contemplate buying these cards.

Software really needs the attention now i want to be able to make my hardware "work" apart from benching, It's stupid to go from 60 fps to 130 in games theres just no point it would be more useful to smoke my money.

gotta get a 4 cards - 2 590s and 2 6990s, throw them in a dual mobo case, overclock everything, and fold fold fold fold fold.

I agree. To an extent.
Even the GTX580 still doesn't get amazing performance in things like Crysis or Metro though. It gets great performance, but not perfect performance. There is always room for improvement on both the hardware and the software side of things.
Games do need to step up, I agree, but then again we are seeing tons of new tech like multimonitors and 3D coming around that require such power. They do indeed use these cards to their fullest. I mean, I dont use multimonitors (maybe in the future) and seldom 3D BUT I know I'm prepared for the next big games when they do take a step up. To an extent of course.

I'm disappointed. When I was reading about this card last time I thought wow, we have a winner. But previous assumptions were correct. The sad truth, the lows on this card are not much different then a 5970 on BF2. However, when considering the noise output, the 590 is surely a better card then the 6990.

Are there ways around this? Yes. Closed headphones while gaming will make you not even consider the noise output of your GPUs.

So right now it looks good for AMD. AMD/ATI has been 2nd best for quite some time until the 5000 series. Now AMD is in the lead, significantly, and at equal or fair prices to nvidia. The good news is that AMD has picked up their game and we can expect their next generation of cards to be even better. AMD has just caught up with Nvidia; this doesn't mean nvidia is slacking.

AMD is win right now i agree, more so for me in the uk as the biggest contributing factor is the price. would you guys in the states pay $1078 for a 590.... I dont think so. the 6990 is over £100 cheaper $160!!!!

the GTX590 is shorter and Quieter. GTX590 has 3D surround support with just one card

GTX590 can be overclocked like a beast. i want to see one of these bad boys cooled on water!

but if you overclock the HD6990, it will be drawing 450W+ which will blow all the electrics in your district of a 25mile radius.
The 6990 uses less with the built in overclock off.

Comparing an overclocked 6990 to a stock 590 is fail...

I'm all for AMD and the 6990. I was super close to buying it over the 590 last night, but I decided to go Nvidia because I wanted something different (I hated the AMD drivers over the past year.) I mention all this because I hate sounding like I might be biased against AMD and sound like I'm downplaying their efforts or anything. I'm not.

But - you say that AMD has just caught up with Nvidia. That's.... incorrect - it's the opposite.
How many dual GPU cards has AMD/ATi put out? They've been doing this technology for awhile now. The 3870x2 was the first no? That was... 2-3 years ago.
This is Nvidia's first REAL crack at dual GPU single card no? That makes it so Nvidia is the one who just caught up to AMD. Not the other way around.
I don't want to sound like I'm bashing AMD or anything. They have a fantastic card no doubt. But, considering they've been doing this for awhile, it's to be expected. Nvidia on the other hand is the one new to this.

Honestly sound isn't an issue since you wont be hearing it while gaming.

If you have the money for a 6990 or gtx590 you wont be using some chump 2.1 setup.

Huh? Didnt Nvidia release the Geforce 9800 GX2 in like 2008?

yes that was their first, which admittedly I forgot about absent mindlessly just now.
But look how that turned out. Pretty poorly as compared to the 4870x2 if I recall correctly.
Then they completely skipped the GTX 490, next gen fermis. There is a reason for that as well, Nvidia clearly isn't all too good in this dual GPU tech.

It's Nvidia who has been, or needs to, play catchup with dual GPU solutions EDIT: on one card /EDIT. The 590 is a great card judging from the reviews, but there is always room for improvement in several areas that you wouldn't expect from them.
