[Guru3D] Geforce GTX590 Review & Benchmarks

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
Quote:
The release today however is very interesting, it's one the most silent multi-GPU solution we have ever had our hands on, the performance really is breathtaking and the power consumption, though high, remains acceptable.

The products reviewed today originate from Point of View, they are one of the five board-partners in Europe to be allowed to sell these products. And whatever you decide to purchase or not, keep in mind that today's launch might be a hard launch with cards in store, yet the reality will be that very few boards will be available in the first wave. In fact we expect less than 2000 board being available for the entire Europe.

Anyway, have a peek at the awesomeness that is the GeForce GTX 590, and then head on over to the next page where as always, we'll go a little deeper, but not too deep. We'll look at noise levels, power consumption, heat, we'll do a nice photo-shoot and heck why not... an extensive benchmark session to see where this product positions itself, especially compared to the Radeon HD 6990.

It might take Ndivia 10 more years to solve SLI performance. It looks sick.

I am glad they still use Crysis for their benchmarks. This card is too much beast.

Why is this surprising for a lot of people? It's two downclocked gtx580's.

Honestly some people make it out to be a huge mystery when this card's performance could already be guessed with two sli gtx580's downclocked a bit. I've been saying this since the specs were released yet they are now accepting it.

It's like people just love being in constant denial.

Which review were you looking at?

Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2
590 = 224
6990 UL = 139

Far Cry 2
590 = 142
6990 UL = 154

Anno 1404
590 = 130
6990 = 90

Crysis Warhead
590 = 83
6990 = 92

Metro 2033
590 = 54
6990 UL = 53

Dirt 2
590 = 143
6990 UL = 131

BFBC2
590 = 106
6990 UL = 102

Based on these results, 5 of them go to the 590, while 2 of them go to the 6990. So please explain to me how the 6990 is faster in almost every game as you put it?

Neither card can claim the Fastest GPU crown IMO, as they both have their pros and cons, and are clearly trading blows, despite the fact the 590 is massively down clocked ( 607 vs 772 clocks ), it's still holding its own, and is in fact outperforming it according to this review.

Once you take noise levels into the equation....

For the cards in a fully stressed status (in-game) we measure just 41 dBA for one card, and yeah, that is actually quite silent. Very surprising to see... well hear.

The 6990 on the other hand...

This, plus, the 6990's microstuttering problems, as evident in many video comparisons.

I have to agree with this. However it would be better to say, "...despite the fact the 590 is massively down clocked compared to the GTX580 ( 607 vs 772 clocks )...".

I say this because the GTX590 possesses two GF110s, the same GPU as the GTX580, and the GTX580 in SLI is a known quantity, and we know how that configuration performs compared to the HD6990.

First thing worth mentioning is that Guru3D always fail with the drivers used during their reviews. They always compare the latest product using the latest drivers to results they got from an older review they have done using older drivers.

That is one of the biggest FAILS a reviewer can do when comparing hardware.

If the focus of the review is to compare a GTX590 and a HD6990, then at least benchmark both at the same time using the latest drivers available at the time of the review.

FYI, Guru3d used results from their earlier 6990 review, which used 11.1 drivers and not the latest 11.4ep drivers. If they had used the 11.4ep drivers with the HD6990, I'm sure the results would be different.

Any bench with a difference of 1fps is a tie. Run it again and again and watch the winner swap places. Also, as I mentioned, use the latest HD6990 drivers and the results would be different.

7 game benchmarks - only 5 comparable benchmark results because only a single GPU was used by the HD6990 on the other 2.

So 5 game benchmarks compared:
AMD = won 2, lost 2, tied 1
Nvidia = won 2, lost 2, tied 1

Looks pretty even to me tbh. With more tinkering of drivers, I'm sure both cards will do even better.

However you have to admit that AMD/ATI has done wonders to extract the performance they have out of 40nm process, considering that each of the GTX590's GPUs are 33% bigger then the HD6990's GPUs and it took nvidia that extra 33% to match AMD/ATi's performance.
