black vs clear vs whatever you guys say

Thread Starter
Hey everybody!

I recently decided to spend some extra money on a keyboard, and to try out a few different kinds, I bought a Deck Legend Toxic (linear) and an XArmor U9BL. After trying both of them for a while, I have come to like both of them. However, I don't have enough money or reason to keep both of them, and I need something that I can use in my dorm room with my roommates at pretty much all hours.
My thing is that I like the way that the Black switches' resistance feels, but I find myself liking the blues on the U9BL better for typing, which a lot of what I'll be doing over the next 4 years of school. The problem is that the blues are too loud to use when my roommates are trying to sleep. Because of this, I've been thinking about returning these 2 keyboards, and buying one that fits my needs better. I was thinking about trading in for a Deck Legend Frost (Tactile), because it has switches that are high-resistance like the blacks, but tactile like the blues, but without the sound. I've heard of the browns being a good compromise for silence with the blues, but I'm not sure about their lower resistance.

I'm kind of limited in my knowledge on keyboards and such, so anything else that you guys can recommend would be greatly appreciated.

If tactile is brown mx switches (i forget) then i would definitely get those.

Browns are really just quiet blues, they'll still make a noise if you bottom out though.

browns are definately not silent

blacks should be good for typing and very silent if you just teach yourself to press the key down enough just enough for it to register

Blacks would be noisier than browns since you basically need to bottom out to type fast on blacks, not on browns. Browns have a tactile bump to make typing easier. Not on blacks. Blacks are linear, and hardly even superior to rubber domes for typing.

Since the browns have a tactile bump, you know where to stop pushing, unlike with the blacks. So technically browns will be quite quieter depending on how you use them.

You don't need to bottom out, anyone who uses blacks will tell you this

I use blacks 24/7.

I said that you basically have to bottom out if you want to type fast. Trying to not bottom out while typing fast on the blacks is almost impossible from everyone I've heard using them, and me.

But it's easier to not bottom out when there's a tactile bump. Hence, the browns.

go with a realforce from topre. you can get the 55g version if you want a little bit more resistance in the keystroke. also very quiet for a mech.

As I always say for switch types - different strokes for different folks; you really need to try them and find out first hand.

Nevertheless, here's my experience with them:

Blacks - Good for gaming, but becomes tedious after a while for typing (not bottoming out on them just felt weird)
Clears - Excellent for typing, but the actuation force + tactile bump made me feel sluggish while gaming

I agree that the Blacks are similar in noise to the Browns, as it is very difficult to not bottom out on the blacks. I feel that they work well for both typing and gaming. As I make quite a few mistakes when typing, the Blues were too 'light' and the Browns felt quite good, but ultimately I ended up choosing Blacks. Oh, and gaming on the blues just felt unnatural for me.
