I flashed my 2 SSDs yesterday (1 Vertex 2 and one Agility 2). I haven't run the windows "toolbox" thingy because I don't have a windows machine that uses an SSD yet.
But I did use this linux utility
and had no data loss whatsoever, and the craziest part is that it only took about 10-15 seconds to run (and this includes the time to actually download the driver, as it automatically downloads the latest firmware)
It's supposed to be able to run on your OS drive, however I had issues doing that on my Agility 2 (desktop drive running FC14), however my laptop drive Vertex 2 (running OpenSUSE11.3) had no problem updating it's only drive running the rootfs, so I just booted up an ubuntu live disc and ran it from there no problem.
I eventually found out that it was a 32bit/64bit problem, so just make sure that you have 32bit utilities/compilers, for this tool was pre-compiled for 32bit systems.
I've also heard that the toolbox utility sometimes has problems running on your boot drive, so if need be, you could always just boot from a live disc and run the updater from there (just make sure it's a 32bit live disc).
