Possible to retain PWM function of fans via molex?

I'm wondering whether its possible to retain the PWM function of a few fans I have, while retaining the speed controlled by the motherboard, and having them powered by molex from the PSU?

Would this simply involve connecting the fans 12v and ground into the molex 12v and ground, then keeping the RPM and PWM line plugged into the fan headers?

I want to daisy chain a few 4-wire PWM fans onto the CPU fan header, but I'm worried about shorting it out.

Basically youre going to want to take the 2 power wires from the connector and solder on a molex connector, then have the PWM wire connected to the mobo.

This will retain PWM control without putting all that current through the mobo

That would take care of 3 fans

thats just the first one I stumbled upon. You may be able to get something similar from newegg or frozencpu if you search around a bit


Also, I dont think the tach output would work with multiple fans on the same circuit because the fans wouldnt be syncing up. So just wire in the one wire off the mobo, which is the PWM.
it would be real easy to diy if you know how to solder. and you can get the connectors from frozencpu if you want to make it nice and reversible.

I thought thats how it was done, but I wasn't sure. I didn't want to permanently connect to the PSU and not have it work.

The fans I have already have a piggyback connected to them, so thats not the big issue.

Yes, but don't send all rpm lines to the mobo unless you use different fan headers. You can send 1 of the fans RPM leads to the mobo. If all fans are the same, then the rpm reading should be close enough b/n them that 1 sensor wire is sufficient to know what speed they are all spinning.

2 of the fans will be push/pull and are exactly the same, the 3rd one in is the only different one and will be a intake fan. The RPM for the 3rd one will go to the case fan header.

Regarding the Akasa daisy chain - I don't need it, as the fan's I'm using already have what I need to do this; I just need to figure out a reversible way to plug the 12v fan leads to molex

oh yeah i didn't even think about you using AC fans.

get a 4-pin fan to molex adapter and pull the pins from the connectors then reassemble as you desire. that's what i'd do i think
