All this is making me worried, as a californian, about "the big one."

Earthquakes happen all the time. We are just more connected and more populated so it seems like everything is happening now.

There have been more unstable times and we earthlings survived

As for what the heck is going on...

i dunno, but something, is brewing under that area... They've detected an increase in magmatic activity and significant bulging under the Toba Caldera too, since the '04 Quake there; and the Indonesian island was "rolled" to a different angle...

Gimme Yellowstone any day... but the sleeping monster under Toba? That scares the hell out of me...

Toba makes Yellowstone look like nothing...

Now this monster 9.0 in Japan and there are reports that it moved Japan by up to 8 feet, and shifted the Earth's axis!

Chile in January...

New Zealand in February...

Japan and Myanmar in March...

Now whats going to happen in April?
Caldera's are creepy, Taupo could take out the north island of NZ. I suppose the Indonesians are in the same boat :/

"A supervolcano is a volcano capable of producing a volcanic eruption with ejecta greater than 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles)"

Most recent VEI 8:
"Lake Taupo, Taupo Volcanic Zone, North Island, New Zealand—Oruanui eruption ~26,500 years ago (~1,170 km³)"

And in regard to VEI 7:
"The only ones in historic times are Tambora, in 1815, Lake Taupo (Hatepe), around 180 CE"

Edit: "turned the sky red over Rome and China." - that's a long way from NZ to be seeing the effects of an eruption.
