well a 580 will be about comparable to 5870s, just a slight performance decrease. The problem with 580s with large res setups is they only have 1.5gb of ram instead of 2gb for ati cards. Ram is very important for high res setups. My main reason for suggesting the 6950/6970s for ati over sli gtx 580s is the price. 580s are just much more expensive. If you are willing to pay the price, they will be about comparable to 6970s in crossfire. Do keep in mind though, that 6970s scale better than 580s at high resolutions and have more ram. If you are set on nvidia, then 580s will serve you fine. It just wouldn't be my first choice.
