computer will not recognize second graphics card

Thread Starter
I recently decided to stick a second graphics card into my rig in order to run a third monitor. I placed it in my second 16x slot correctly and when I turn on the computer i can hear the card spinning up but neither windows or Ubuntu detect the card at all. The card is a Nvidia GT120 and I know that it isn't defective because I have tried using it with another computer which recognized it successfully. I have the most recent Nvidia drivers installed on both OS and have also tried placing a 8600GS into the secondary pci-e slot with the same results

I read online about other people with the same motherboard who where having similar problems with two Nvidia cards and that a simple bios update would solve the problem but even after flashing, only my primary Graphics card is detected.

Are there any special drivers that needed to detect my second card? or is my second pci-e slot defective?

Any help would be appreciated.

If i read that correctly you're just trying to put another card in and run another monitor independently from it? That is not possible. You could run another nvidia card as a dedicated physics card if the card supports it or you could run a second gtx 460 in sli.

thanks for the reply.

If its not possible then that's my mistake. I did originally plan to use the card as a physx card though so i can still make use of it . Is there anything that I need to do prior to the card being recognized? or is there a problem with the hardware?

Did you go into nvidia control panel under the physx tab pull down to see if the option was there for the gt 120?

I can't find shader specification for the gt 120 but i would assume it doesn't have the rendering power to be useful as dedicated physx card with your 460, I have used a 450gts as a physx card with my 460 before and it's nice for like $100.00

I guess its not powerful enough then. I got the card for free anyways so its fine. I might as well wait to either SLI or get a card that supports 3 monitors.

Thanks for the info.
