955BE Good or Dumb overclock? - Page 3

post #21 of 48
What are your clock settings? I have to run 1.55v to maintain my stable 4.0Ghz. I have a FSB oc though, 236.8x17, my chip really didn't like the multi OC.

I was doing a 200x20 multiplier with the voltage at 1.5v and the NB at default (2000Mhz) and I got a crash after 2 minutes of IBT on maximum. I want to volt higher but my 212+ can't handle the temps.

Try 2400 NB with Volts at 1.203 or 1.206 or a couple of notches over your default...also is your ram getting enuff volts think ripjaws like a bit over stock..mine do

Oddly enough my CPU/NB stock voltage is 1.3v. I havent touched my ram voltage, figure I wouldn't need to since Im running them at 9-9-9-24-2t.

Just now I did 3400Mhz CPU @stock vcore (1.375v) and 2200 NB @stock voltage (1.300v).
Did 4 runs at Max with no errors and my CPU temp maxed out at 45c and my NB temp maxed out at 47c. Still think its weird my NB is hotter than my CPU, but doesn't my finger to the touch on the heatsink on the inside of the case.

Just an update for anyone interested. But I did to the stepping process and tweaked my overclock a good bit.

CPU -> 4.0Ghz 200x20 multi @1.425v -> 53c full load with H50 (2xBlademasters from my Hyper 212+ in push/pull)
Northbridge - > 2600Mhz NB @1.200v -> 57-58c full load with stock mobo heatsinks (I am basing this temperature on HWMonitors TMPIN02 - could be memory temp maybe?)
Memory -> 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24-2t @stock voltage(1.5v maybe?)

I did 5 passes of Intel Burn Test on max (7800megs) and no errors with 53.9Gflops.

Does this sound normal to anyone? maybe additional tweaks I should do?

Damn, the MX-4 I ordered hasnt arrived, oh well,,,

Have you tried tightening the ram timings up something like 8-8-8-24 1t ? Youd probably have to up volts a bit to stabilize them

Mine are 7-8-7-24 @1600 and on stock they get a paltry 7.5 in WEI when I run them at same timings but up the speed to 1708 they really shine, 7.8 in WEI and the bench tests in Everest really fly at that speed.

Ive tried allsorts with them even 7-7-7-20 1t and lower speed, but they seem to have a sweet spot at 7-8-7-24 1t @1708

Of course though you have to make sure they are then stable before CPU OC

Your "Northbridge" temperature is referring to the Northbridge on the motherboard, not the CPU/NB on the processor die itself (also called the Integrated Memory Controller, or IMC. To be clear, you are overclocking your CPU/NB or IMC, not your motherboard's Northbridge. The stock "NB" voltage on my board is also 1.3v, that may be why you are getting confused. The CPU/NB basically runs at the same temperature as the processor itself. There is no way to measure the CPU/NB temperature directly that I know of.

Tl;dr Adjust the CPU/NB voltage, not the NB voltage.

@WildcatWhiz ok I think I understand much more now. I under volted my NB voltage to 1.100v and it did nothing for the temps. But my CPU/NB voltage is at 1.300 and I can't go any lower at 2600Mhz. But I might just get an aftermarket northbridge heatsink/fan.

1.3v on the CPU/NB and a speed of 2600Mhz is perfectly normal. That's what I am at right now, in fact. 2600Mhz is about all you'll get (most likely) out of that chip on a 212+. Congrats on the overclock!

Oh I changed up to a H50 for the novelty of water cooling haha. But thanks! I am still tweaking some things, like memory overclocking. I've been told OCing 8Gbs on amd mobos is a bit tricky.
