6950 Unlock and having issues...

This is my first post here on OCN and I almost feel guilty asking for help right now, since I haven't contributed anything so far but I'm asking for help. Anyways, a few days ago I had purchased a Sapphire 6950 2GB and I attempted to do the shader unlock, but now I'm getting some issues. First off, I tried to do enough research in order to make sure that I was doing this all properly so I got the shader unlock bios and used ATIwinflash to put it on the card (position 1, the default one) . I did this yesterday and everything seemed to work just as intended - I got the 1536 shaders and everything else stayed normal (1.1/800/1250) and GPUtool showed no artifacts.

Today is when it went wrong. I was playing Crysis and I noticed that the GPU usage was not at 99%+, it was jumping all around from 80 - 100, so I immediately stop playing and I ran GPUtool. What happened seemed good until a massive flash of thousands of artifacts appeared and then dissappeared. It does this everytime I run GPUtool now. Now I flashed my bios back to the original that I saved earlier and I put my bios switch to position 2 and GPUtool still has the artificacts issue. Also, I don't know what to do about the powertune meter in CCC, and I might think that it could have to do with that. Thanks again.

Did you increase the Power control settings in CCC all the way to 20%?

I don't think that's his problem. I could overclock w/o adjusting the power setting and my card will not artifact. I think he got a lemon.

OP I think your card is a dud and it needs to be exchange. Just to clarify, did you use shader unlock mod or did you unlock to a 6970 BIOS? A lot of people get this confuse.

I made sure I was getting the 6950 unlock and not the 6970 bios

Do you get artifacts then a bsod or a system freeze, or does it throw a TDR and restart the card?

I would run GPUtool and then everything is perfectly fine for 3 - 5 seconds and then hundreds or thousands of artifacts appear and then they dissappear. Once they dissappear they never come back up as long as GPUtool is running. So... I get a flash of artifacts once I start GPUtool. I don't notice anything at all when I play a game though... well, not yet.

Hmm your problem is unique and I'm not to sure how to go about it. Try to use some other artifact tool beside GPUTOOL (might be a software bug). Try MSI Kombuster, Furmark, and ATI Tool. If there are no artifact when running those program then it could just be GPUTOOL.

I've tried Kombuster and everything seems fine with that. I tried a different version of GPUtool and it still does the flash of artifacts (but it does come a bit later). Again, gaming seems perfectly fine. I also wonder why the GPU load jumps around from 80 - 100%... shouldn't it always be 99 or 100% when gaming?
Not always, I play warcraft 3 and my GPU load around 60%-70% most of the time. During Crysis, Crysis Warhead, and CIV5 my GPU load is 98%-100%. It depend on the game but most game should be 9x-100%. Try Furmark for 10 minutes and ATI Tool for 10 minutes too. If both software shows no artifact then your card should be good. To be honest, I think your card is good since no artifacts appear during gameplay.
