XFX 5850 Black Edition Crossfire Problems

Thread Starter
I just finished my Crossfire setup last night - two XFX 5850 black edition's.

Everything is set to max with vsync off. I'll use TF2 as an example:

Crossfire off, no GPU OC

Crossfire off, GPU OC

Crossfire on, no GPU OC

Crossfire on, GPU OC

So basically, Crossfire is more than halving my framerates... in addition to that, when it's enabled I'll sometimes see it constantly jump erratically between two numbers, say.. 251 and 110.

I'm using two bridges. The CPU is slightly OC'd. MSI Afterburner is being used for GPU OC.

The first card had been flashed from stock bios to MSI unlocked bios in order to enable voltage control/higher clocks, so I flashed the second one to the same bios (it is the one linked at this post).

I've tried swapping the cards.. tried everything short of removing them, doing a driver sweep, and installing the cards one by one with a driver sweep before each install (this was suggested on a forum somewhere).

I have checked other games, like Bulletstorm, Dead Space, and Rift. The FPS is lower with it enabled.

I should not be getting lower framerates with crossfire! D:

Any idea what may be causing this?

Yes.. though I am picking up the new B3 revision for this motherboard either tomorrow or day after which will mean reinstallation of all of those (hopefully no need for fresh OS install since it's the same board)

I am not, however the new board I'll be picking up soon should come with the latest bios, if not I'll flash it to the absolute newest one.

Try removing one of the bridges. Ati only recommends one. Also what version of drivers? Have you tried without AB running? Are both cards reference cards?

weird..did you do a clean reinstall of the drivers??

have you tried doing 3d benches to see if they scale??i used to have a 5850 CF setup..knowing how it scales you should be getting more than what the Single card gives..

also could you post some GPU-Z screenies??and are you sure that the XFX is a reference design card??AFAIK only reference cards can be flash modded..

I tested with one of the bridges in both positions, then with the other bridge in both positions. Same results. Closing Afterburner gave the same result.

Yes, these are reference (first generation xfx 5850's). They look like this: XFX%20Radeon%205850.jpg

I've flashed the P8P67 EVO to the latest 1502 (3/02/2011) bios, no difference.

I'm getting the feeling TF2 isn't the best way to check Crossfire performance, because my fps meter in it is rapidly switching between two numbers... is that indicative of de-synced fps?

I did install drivers anew (Cat 11.2) when I got the second card. However, I have not tried installing the cards+drivers one by one with a driver sweep in between. Think that would help?

Is it possible that these cards running a nonstock bios is somehow preventing them from Crossfiring properly? I am willing to try a stock bios if someone can link it... don't think I'll be needing an OC if Crossfire is actually working.
