SLI 2 different cards

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I just bought a gtx 460 for a good price and I was wondering if it is possible to SLI this with my older gts 250? I have searched around a bit and a lot of what i have read leads me to the idea that it would not work, or my 460 card would take on the speeds of the 250.

Interested in your guy's thoughts, and if i cannot sli the 2 then any suggestions on how i might get the best performance out of both cards? atleast until i buy another 460.

Thanks!

No you can't

But what you can do is use your GTS250 as a dedicated Physx card.

It would not work with the GTS 250 if I remember correctly. However you can use your GTS 250 as a physx card solely for the physx enabled games if you have them. I know with AMD/ATI cards it has to be in the same generation to crossfire and I believe it isn't the same with Nvidia cards. I'll let a more knowledgeable person answer that.

With ATI you could for example xfire a 5870 with a 5970.

Alright ill try making it a dedicated physx card, its better than sitting on a shelf in my room i guess haha. I plan to get crysis and then crysis 2 soon and diablo 3 when it comes out. The only thing i have running on my 250 right now is starcraft2 and black ops. Both of which could use some more juice.

Starcraft 2 is more CPU bound, and Black Ops doesn't seem to be coded very well, even for very powerful systems, but there's no problem in getting a little boost The games that do use Physx will appreciate the extra card.

Using it as a dedicated PhysX is the only real way to go. Only cards of the same generation (G80 or G92 chips vs GF114 won't work using you as an example. But a 9800GT and a GTS250 can work together). And for those non-PhysX enabled games, you can run Folding@Home on the GTS250 and see no recognisable performance drop while playing.

Good luck with whatever decision you go with.
