At what point will a 965 limit gaming? - Page 11

Just get the card and save up for bulldozer. If you don't like the performance when it comes out you can always go to SB.

And really, you won't notice a big bottleneck with an X4. I would say just invest in a 30$ aircooler and get it to 3.8-3.9Ghz, if your so concerned about a bottleneck.

And to all you intel fanboys, yes the chip is bottlenecking. But please don't come here and say a 920 at stock has no bottleneck with an overclocked 6990.

Depends on what you want to do.

Nobody is saying you can't game on a AMD chip. What we're saying is coupling a high end video card with a low end cpu is a bad idea.

A 6990 is pretty much on par with my current setup, if you think for a second any Phenom II at 4GHz is even close to pushing the graphics cards as far as an i5-2500k at 5.2GHz well you'd simply be wrong.

All we're saying is you don't buy a $150 cpu and par it with a $700 gpu. If you want to use a $150 AMD chip get a $150 GTX 460 and be done with it. If you want more graphical power, get a cpu that can handle it (Intel).

Despite that and from personal experience with AMD chips at 4.3-4.5GHz I will be so bold as to say AMD is so far behind that I have higher GPU usage with SLI than any of you will have with a single high powered video card... Yes, AMD is a bottleneck. Do you care? I dunno, but the op never asked if you cared, he asked if it was going to hold back a 6990 and if any of you think it won't you're smoking some good stuff.

AMD simply can not compete in the high end market, and with the release of a $220 Sandy Bridge chip they can't compete anywhere any longer but the ultra low end segment.
That's crazy

I get 28k GPU score on my 470s @ 800 MHz and Q9550 @ 3.9 GHz. It's time to throw in that 2600K.

Honestly right now the i5-2500k is the best price vs performance chip on the market. It's crazy fast for a very reasonable price.

My girlfriend kinda "shops" with me, and I always try to find deals. Everyone always says Intel setups cost way too much, but I didn't pay a lot really.

$190 for my cpu (used)

$190 for my board (used B2 broken dimms needs to be RMA'ed)

$185 for my ASUS GTX 470 (new)

$180 for my EVGA GTX 470 (used) came with a backplate and a lifetime warranty.

Toss in $70 for my ram and we're talking about a $815 for the main compents on a rig that can dam near hit 40k gpu score in vantage.

Heck at the time of purchase it was cheaper to go with SB over a 1090T and Crosshair IV.. You can't really beat that.

It will also have to do with the game and how many cores you use. CPUs are bottlenecked by the software being run, not the cpu bottlenecking the GPU, Dual or single.

You might argue, then why does an i7 out perform a phenom if the stress is on the card? Well if you check the highest end max graphical benchmarks all over the internet, you can see the difference between them is minimal. And this could be put down to triple channel memory or higher clocks.
Even AMD used i7 CPU to show off 5970 on Youtube. They would have chosen Phenom II architecture if the difference was minimal. Think about it, what reason lies behind such a thing? A company refuses to use their OWN CPU, they refused propogate their own hardware and went with their biggest competitiors. The difference between Phenom II and i7 is that much blindingly obvious i think. Especially in terms of bottlenecking multiple high-end cards.

WOW! if you oc your phenom to 4ghz who cares? wont see much of a difference :S although id look at getting a far better psu than what ever psu you have. something around 750w atleast

Becaues even a x6 at 4.3Ghz with a 3.2GHz NB will bottleneck in games, and it can be very bad depending the game.

Here is my 1090T:

Hey look here I got it to the point where a single card would bottleneck to 70% in the second test! It only took 4449MHz with a 3255NB!

Sadly that same overclock got crushed by a game from 2006 known as World of Warcraft.

Want a 45% bottleneck in a game from 2006 on a mid range video card, AMD is the right choice then.

Want to bottleneck less with twice as much gpu power? You know what I'll say.

thats weird? in wow what fps are you getting? and you know wow only uses one gpu? and wow only uses all of my cpus and never goes past 50% on the cpu as far as i know. never seen more than 80% gpu usage either. metro and mafia2 use all 4 cores aswell as using my gpu at 100% so head scratching time :S
post #109 of 125
Does that guy think because he isn't getting 100% CPU usage there is a bottleneck? Or that a faster processor getting more performance is a bottleneck?

I can't believe this guy is still spreading that garbage. Ever since he got that 2500k he has been saying the same crap.

A Game from 2006 would be made to use 1-2 Cores, if you had half a brain you would realize that a Game coded for 1-2 Cores will need outright clock-speed more than anything..

Attachment 202057

Thats a bottleneck, in BFBC2 BTW..
