At what point will a 965 limit gaming? - Page 13

I agree strongly with what Tokadub had to say.

It depends on what you want really, and your budget.

I'm waiting for Bulldozer to come out so I can build my first rig. I'm running an HP AMD X4 9550 at 2.2GHz... 6GB DDR2..., and a XFX Radeon 4870 1GB. Compared to many peoples' systems here, it's inferior by a bit.

But at 1680x1050, I get a solid 45-50FPS in Bad Company 2, All settings high, 8XMSAA, 16xAA, (No/HBAO/VSYNC)

That FPS is very playable for me in a game like BC2 and it looks great. I'm thinking that I'll still be able to play BF3 with mostly high settings but maybe no AA, with my current set up now.

Either way I still want to build my first rig with Bulldozer before BF3 comes, because I'm anxious

BTW, I'm fairly new to these forums and haven't been around too much. I'm hoping that you guys could help me if I have any questions when I'm building my first rig in August or so!

That should work.

My x4 40 isn't too far off off a x4 965, but I'll probably do something similar...

Upgrade to BD or SB/IB, and CF, because 2 6950s should be plenty powerful for a while.(EDIT: But I just put this rig together, so I still should get a x6 1090, and then CF, and then go from there to whatever, but so goes the tech river)

At 1080p and 4x AA, gamer shadows and physics, but everything else maxed, I get a solid 45-50 average in crysis warhead.

I just tried metro 2033 maxed except 4xAA, I didn't run fraps though, but it looked alright, +30fps for sure.

It pretty much destroys BC2, FarCry2, JC2, singularity.

GTA4, Metro and Crysis are really my only trouble games, that I've tried, and thats just because I try to max them, but I now hate seeing less then 40fps, I can almost do it, but not quite with a x4 40 and 1 6950

Just to follow up on this, I think we can all agree a Q9550 is as good or slightly better than a Phenom II clock for clock.

Using the same gpu settings and a mild 4.5GHz overclock I was able get a gpu score of 35k. I also provided graphs for usage of the gpus, the cpu, and the cpu in relation to the 3d mark vantage score.

This is about as clear a demonstration of a cpu based bottleneck as anyone can make.

I hope the OP does the right thing and gets a $150-$200 gpu to go with his CPU or seriously considers upgrading both as one part complements the other.

Q9550=$280

AMD Phenom II X4 820=$100

The question is, are you paying almost triple the price for the same performance? I think so.

Q9550 = 3 Generation old tech. Intel never lowers the price on legacy processors which I think is dumb.

The 1090T when I bought it was $235, I think it's reasonable to continue to compare it to the i5-2500k which is $225 new (I got mine used but thats beside the point).

The 820 isn't a very good chip. It has less l3, it's c2 stepping, and its locked. I wouldn't even go so far as to call it a true Phenom II, it's like a Phenom II//Athlon II mix.

All this is irrelevant though when we start talking about high end single card or multiple gpu setups. There is no "$220" model from AMD that will truly push those cards. In fact that is the point of this entire thread. If you want a higher end gpu or more than one there really is no current offering from AMD to really push them.

As seen above AMD tested their new cards using a 1366 system because the already knew selling video cards is based on how much power they have and they knew an AMD processor wouldn't push their new gpus as far as possible.

AMD is still the kings of budget, but budget builds don't include 6990s or 580s or two 460s. Buying that much gpu power and putting it in a budget built is just creating a huge cpu based bottleneck.
