budget gaming build

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I play some games but I'm not a hardcore gamer anymore like I used to be. Now with fulltime job and girlfriend and balancing social life between gaming it's kinda become difficult to put alot of time in it.

So i'm basically looking for a reasonable cheap build that stil allows me to play games comfortably but it doesn't have to be on the highest settings etc. My current computer is 4 years old or something and I just feel like building a computer from scratch.

After doing research on the web and different components I believe I have ''finalized'' my build. My current set-up which I'm intending to buy is this :

CPU: Phenom II X2 555 BE ( planning on unlocking possible cores and oc'ing )
CPU-cooler: CM Hyper 212

GPU: Saphire Radeon HD 5770 vapor-x ( planning on oc'ing that why vapor-x )
mobo: asrock 870 extreme-3 ( Cheap, allows a possible CFX with 2x 5770 for future upgrade if nessecary )

HDD:Samsung HD502HJ 500 GB ( 500gb is enough for me, seem good price/quality )

Case: CM gladiator 600 ( seems good price/quality )
PSU: OCZ Stealtxstream 2 700W ( maybe too much ? 600 W enough even for CFX ? )

Memory: Kingston HyperX 4 GB DDR3-1333 Kit (Light-Retail, KHX1333C7AD3K2/4G)
=> No idea for memory, Hyperx will be good I believe but should I get 1600-ddr3 with cl8 ?
=> Here alot of things that ddr3-1333 is better with Phenom II processors etc but then I read things like 1600 is better if you have a Phenom with c3 etc
=> Basically I'm clueless for the memory

Also for upgradeability if my current settup doesn't suffice anymore I could add a 2nd 5770 vapor-x in crossfire that's why I was thinking of getting a 700W PSU instead of 600W.

I also hear things like people should wait for the sandybridge or bulldozers to come out.
How do you feel about this ? I feel like my current set-up will meet my requirements just fine I believe and will be cheaper.

Cheers,
thorby

amd imc defaults to 1333, it can run faster without any issues
and amd likes lower timings, cl9 or lower is better

To be able to play BF BC2 at a decent level you need tricore or quad.
You could get an Athlon 640 instead of that phenom. If that phenom is not unlockable you can t do to much via overclocking.
Number of cores started to matter in some games.
With the right CPU the 5770 is ok even by itself .To bad you can t find a MSI HAWK 5770 on the market.
Research for a 790X based mobo if you want crossfire.

I ended up getting Athlon II's because I saw that there wasn't HUGE differences between them and a Phenom II. I opted for more cores over extra cache because I believe in future games developments will utilize more cores. That's just my opinion. As it turns out, my Athlon unlocked to a Phenom anyways.

THE MOST EXCELLENT CHOICE OF COOLER AMONG BUDGET BUILD. 'Nuff said.

For the past year this was my choice as well. But when it came time to buy one, I found great improvements in benchmarks made with 6850's as compared to 5770's. I was also comparing to NVidia's and just found 6850 cheaper for same benchmark results. In fact, just $25 AMIR more than the 5770's and so I bought.

I don't know about you but I wouldn't trust cheap boards if planning to unlock and overclock. I would spend that extra $20-40 for better quality.

Good choice. Wishing I had gone with it instead of WD blue's but whatever.

Cases to me are like buying shirts. What you like might not be what I like. Does it functions like you want? Does it look good to you? So on. If you're concerned about quality, CoolerMasters are in my opinion in the top 3 of case makers. Just my opinion from what I've read from other people.

Check out Tator Tot's recommended power supplies: http://www.overclock.net/power-suppl...-supplies.html
Find the wattage you need, then search the cheapest, and you definitely CANNOT go wrong any in his list.

Again, check Tator Tot's thread. He has explained in general what you should shoot for if you want to crossfire.

You should wait for bulldozer if you can. But I don't think they'll meet your budget. But consider this: motherboards will come out at that time that support Bulldozer right out of the box. Get budget processor for now and upgrade to Bulldozer later should you need to. As for Sandy Bridge, they're already out and the SATA issue has been fixed. But to find a set up cheap as AMD is hard to do. But if you do find something, go for it. I would have if I found something.

Consider what I did: I bought everything except graphic card. I then upgraded to a video card when I had at least $150 available. That price point always seems to be the sweet spot for current games and budget builds. Got my 6850 for $155 AMIR and very glad I waited instead of buying the 5770.

Obviously my suggestion probably raised the cost a bit due to motherboard choice and GPU. But you can find a good motherboard in an open box deal from Newegg. I've bought 3 so far and none of them has let me down. First 2 came with EVERYTHING. Last one didn't come with anything but it was 1/3 of its retail price so I kinda expected it.

Some alternate options you might like:
Phenom II x2 555 + MSI GTX 460 768MB Cyclone cooler - equally quiet, and a great card that is a big step up from 5770 - $235, $215 AR
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO - approx. $114 shipped, $104 AR - not as cheap but a great mobo that allows for 8x-8x crossfireX/SLI (w/hack) which is slightly more optimal. Can also get Open box for a decent $78 shipped at Newegg.
Team XTreem 2x2GB 1600Mhz memory - decent overclocker - $45 no rebates
Antec TP-650 + Lancool K58W - excellent modular PSU, excellent case - $135 shipped (actually slightly cheaper than the case/PSU you've chosen)
Samsung F3 1TB - twice the space for $10 more, what's there to lose? - $60 shipped [Superbiiz]. Or you can get the 500GB $45 shipped there. Superbiiz should ship it nice and fast.

Yes ,the HAWK seems to be available ,but the Sapphire 6850 is only 30 $ a little more expensive. The 6850 needs a quad for sure to express itself. So he will need to add 11$ more to get the Athlon II 640 instead of the Phenom.

Ok tnx for the input guys. I'm from Belgium so I won't be able to order my things from newegg tho.

So what I hear from u guys the Phenom II x2 555 + saphire 5770 isn't that great anymore.
I would be better off with a Athlon 640 + 6850. Allthough I am considering to get the Phenom II X4 955 BE instead of the Athlon 640.

Bit more expensive but doesn't the 955 BE give me a significant performance increase in comparison with the Athlon 640 ?

As far as the mobo goes I don't really know. If I'm switching to the 6850 do I need a mobo that supports CFX ? Because I don't see myself putting 2x 6850.

I guess for ram I'll just take ddr3-1600 hyperx w cl8 or 9.
Yes it does. The Phenom II X4 955 BE is great for gaming, and easy to overclock.
