Could you help me wrap my head around how that Maverick thing works? I can just go USB into the back of the unit and...? That's it? Sounds pretty cool.
The quality is really good? That's what I care about the most. What about a mic, too? Is that going to be an issue? I don't use speakers, this would be for headphones.
Yup pretty much or use your onboards SPDIF or coaxial out. You are transmitting a digital signal straight to a digital to analog converter(DAC). Instead of the motherboard transmitting to your onboard DAC or transmitting the digital signal to a sound card, it will send it to the external DAC.
It's a great DAC, a good buck for the bang. The mic will go into your mic jack on the motherboard. Simple as that. This DAC doesn't have an amp for speakers, but it does for a headphone.
If you want something cheaper, you could look into the Zero DAC. Similar to the Maverick D1 and if you buy the version with the Burr Brown OPA627 op amp it's a bit better.
Edit: If you look through Head-Fi's for sale forum you may be able to find a cheaper Zero DAC or a modded one with dual OPA627 op amps.Edited by aksthem1 - 3/25/11 at 8:30am
