Sandy Bridge i3 vs i5 physical core performance?

As I understand it, the key difference between the Sandy Bridge i5 and the i3 is the number of physical cores. The i3 can enable HT for a four-threaded mode. However, the two processors use the same architecture. Other than clockspeed, is there any difference between a physical core on an i3 and a physical core on an i5? If, hypothetically, you disabled HT on the i3 and overclocked it to the same speed as the i5, and were only using one physical core, would performance be the same?

Sorry for the strange question, but I thought OCN would be the place to ask!

core for core they are the same. the only difference now in terms of specs is more cache and multipliers for higher clocks with turbo boost. they both are from the same fabrication.

actually thers one more diff...i5 comes in 2 flavors...
1)actual 4 cores and no ht + turbo
2) 2 cores with ht+ turbo
and i5 has larger cache

i3 comes in only 1 variant
1) 2cores and ht no turbo...
lesser cache...
but coz there base tech is same and they r of same processor family....there core per core performance will be pretty much same...

The i5's have more cache overall, but the same amount per core(i3 3/2, i5 6/4).

That was the case with the LGA 1156 platform, in which there were dual core with HT i5 (i5 6x0) and quad core i5 with no HT (i5 7x0).

With Sandy Bridge CPUs that does not happen.

i3 2x00 are dual core CPUs with HT, while the i5 2x00 are all quads with no HT.

What about the i5-2390T? This looks like an 1155 dual-core with HT.

i was thinking about lga 1156 ,my bad...
still i do think sb dual core i5's r released or will be released.....
but the same differentiation holds for even sb i5 and i3's....

Seems I was wrong then

I didn't know about the i5 2390T... especially it being a dual core?

What the hell is Intel thinking?

The i5 2300 is a Quad core with no HT, and then, the higher model 2390T is a dual core with HT?

Intel always screws up the naming scheme... why do they it, is beyond any comprehension.
