Bring down 8800 Temps?

Thread Starter
Any suggestions on how to get temps on an 8800 down some?

They hit 97 just now after about 30 minutes of l4d2 with 1200 by 800 (roughly) resolution 4x msaa anti aliasing and everything else maxed.

This card is 3 years old and I really don't want to dabble with after market drivers because, I already hear the fan cranking up to max.

Although I did give this card away, I would still like for it to last a long time to the person I gave it too.. so any help would be epic. The case (Nzxt M59) gives plenty of air, a fair amount of detail has been giving to cable management.. so Really not sure what else may be causing it.

Think it would make any difference if I reapplied thermal paste or something?

Change thermal paste and be sure the cooler is clean of dust... Do you have any fan profile set with a program like afterburner to increase fan speed based on temps?

Remove the backplate! I dropped 10* off my 8800GTS 512's when I was running them that way. Also my GTS's never hit anything over 80 EVER and I folded with them 24/7 for 8 months. Check to make sure it is actually reaching 100% fan speed.

Also make sure there isn't dust in it.
I noticed mine was at 80c idle, then I cleaned it and now it's at 56c idle and 74c on load.

My eVGA 8800gt superclock use to idle at 60-70ish and goes to 100c during load. I bought Zalman VF 900 or something like that to cool it down. It cost me around $25 and it's worth it. Idle was 40ish and load never goes over 70c, it's quiet and help improve overclock. If you're planning to stick with the 8800 for another year or so then buy a GPU cooler.

As others, stated, I would check the fan speed. I personally manually set the fan speed of my video card during the summer months since my place gets really and it's hard to keep my living room below 78F. Cleaning out the card and your case can help with lowering the temps. Good solutions that don't cost any money.

I would not put any money into a 3 year old card since there's so many good powerful upgrades such as the 560TX or even the 460gtx that you could be saving your money towards.

Yeah, these 8800 cards sure run really warm. Mine hit 107C during a Crysis 2 session.

I am contemplating an upgrade to a GTX 560 Ti, but I really want to see some numbers from Kepler first...

I've got a EVGA 560 Ti and I've been testing it for a while now. Here are some of the results taken using MSI Kombuster 2.0.0 (KMark Extreme) and Unigine Heaven 2.5 benchmarks (All settings @ maximum possible w/ 1920*1080):

Enjoy.

PS: 822-2004 are nVidia's default clocks.
900-2106 are EVGA's default clocks.

Be more specific since the 8800GTX don't have the same mount as the lesser 8800GT or the GTS cards.

if I am not mistaken its the 8800 GT.

Will remove backplate and see what i see tomorrow.

I don't have any desire to place money in a 3 year old card and they don't either..

If worse comes to worse, they will run it to ground and order a new 460 or some other low end card.

Hell even low end cards these days pack incredible punch.
