Sapphire Card

Ok all just ordered this card due to budget coinstraints - moving up from a 4870x2 so still good upgrade - im ok with it staying as is but i picked up the reference card. Im quite aware its hit or miss to unlock it to a 6970 but I was hoping the wonderful community could post some tips to unlock and possible issues i may run into... Im fairly competent so any info is a plus and specifically if someone has already unlocked this card... thanks guys!

I recommend unlocking the shader only. It uses your original bios and mod it to unlock the shader. Flash the 6950 with the modded bios and check GPU-Z. You should have unlock shaders. This is the safest method to unlocking the 6950.

Na it may still unlock and even if it does not, the difference at the same clocks is only 5% or so.

Well I just ordered this one, 10USD less...

I do have a Asus 6950 and unlocked the shaders.. There are many "Unlock 6950" threads in the ATI system...Read them over and see what is the best unlock for you...

I ordered an MSI from amazon that was pictured red PCB, but it was black and modded no problem. I recommend using the run command prompt to flash, very easy with zero issues. Could never get the other way to work. 3 successful flashes all at 950x1400 stock voltage.

That the 6950 mod or the 6970 flash? 6950's 1.1v stock GPU voltage is very hard to reach 950mhz, not to say it can't happen, but three times would be crazy luck.

but yes, even without the mod/unlock, the GPU/memory can clock up like a mofo. Just enable overdrive to +20% and slide those mhz up.

Correct 6950 flash to 6970.

Explains that nice OC. Stock 6970 GPU voltage is 1.25 vs the 6950s 1.1v. I'm getting 915mhz at 1.1v

Some people have claimed dead cards after a month or two with the 6970 flashes. Current thoughts are the 1.6v mem voltage might burn out the lower rated memory on the 6950. Although, 1.5v to 1.6v is less than a 10% voltage increase, so I'm not sure.
