Windows only reports 2gb of RAM, but 4gb are installed.

Hello there!

I am having a problem with my computer that I just can't get my head around. Windows 7 is only reporting that it has 2gb of RAM installed. The computer actually has 2 x 2gb sticks of RAM, which PC Wizard is reporting correctly. Both sticks of RAM work, as I can take either one out and the computer will run fine. Msconfig will only allow me to set 2gb of RAM as the maximum as well. I have checked and my motherboard does support 4gb of RAM.

I have no idea what to do!

PC specs:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit
CPU: Pentium Dual-Core E5400 @ 2.70GHz
Motherboard: ASUS P5KPL-AM IN/GB
RAM: 2 x melco 2gb DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6400
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks!

Windows 7 Ultimate "32 bit" only supports up to 3.2GB iirc. The missing 1.2GB is probably shared out to the graphics card.

Is there anywhere I can check to see if this is the case?

Yeah, 32 bit only supports 3.2GB and some of that 3.2 is going to your graphics card(in this case, 1.2GB). Sorry.

First you can use msconfig and look under Boot / Advanced Options / Maximum Memory entry, make sure this is unchecked. (reboot when done)

If that doesn't work look in your BIOS and see if it is reporting all 4GB.
If it is look for something along the lines of "Shared Video RAM" in your bios and disable it.

msconfig was unchecked.
The BIOS is reporting the 4GB of RAM.
Although I can't find anything along the lines of "shared video RAM" I'm afraid...

Should I upgrade to a 64bit version of Windows?

No, 32-bit supports up to 4GB. The video RAM would be taking away some of that and make it some 3-3.5GB, but 2GB is a bit too low...
Enable memory remapping?
