Upgrade my graphic cards or get a TH2G Digital...

post #1 of 13

Asked this a while back but just wanted to revive the topic really as I'm unsure.

This is my predicament. Right now I have 2 22" monitors (1920x1080). I'd like to get a third for 3 screen gaming and just some more multiscreen multitasking goodness but but Graphic Cards don't support 3 screen in crossfire or 3 screen gaming at all (by default). So I was thinking in the summer (well now or the next few weeks) that I'd do some upgrades. Just here's the problem obviously I only have a limited amount of money. And I was unsure what to upgrade. I didn't want to just upgrade my graphic cards as thought it'd suck using 5XXX or 6XXX cards with my Q6600... As awesome as it may be it is a bit old so I really wouldn't want to get a new graphic card without upgrading my processor but that's a whole new tin of worms as I'd have to then upgrade my Mobo, RAM and waterblock... I'd probably want cross fire for extra awesomeness. And that's money I wouldn't want to spend unless I really had to... Anyway I digress.

I just wanted some advice. Should I look into getting some 5XXX or 6XXX with a third monitor and dumping my 4890s which I only just started using, so I'm a bit reluctant and upgrade my processor and stuff over the next few months. If so which card would perform close as well as the 4890s in crossfire... Orrrrrrrrrr...

Should I get the triplehead2go digital second hand and that third monitor like next week and keep my 4890s and then upgrade next year like I always planned to and get everything in one go and probably get a 7XXX series card or whatever's out!

Suggest and discuss!!

PS: I'd rather spend less but I'd like to know the best option...

If you plan on gaming at decent game rates at that resolution...you will need more vram.. the 6950 2gb versions are your best bet right now...

to give you a idea on performance wise... a 5850 performs roughly like a 4850x2 while a 5870 is roughly a 4870x2... the 6950s are above the 5870(performance wise) and have more vram for eyefinity....you could sell your 4890s to defray the cost of the 6950 and spend the rest on the THIRD monitor...

TH2G is a waste for gaming... more app for multi monitor apps that require SOME 3D(like CAD) and some 2D menus... If i recall TH2G has limited resolution capabilites for multi monitors while eyefinity will go to the lowest max resolution in your group...

Hmmm I've just been hesitant to part with my 4890's as I went through so much to get them last year and I only started using them last month!! But I really want to go to 3 screens. A new monitor and that graphic card wouldn't cost too must and a second 6950 and some point would more than keep me in the game. And I reckon I could get a decent price for my 4890s... Even if I am reluctant to sell them... Just worried about pairing those with my Q6600 even if it a 4GHz and paired with 4GB of some pretty DDR2 ram it's still old tech and could bottle neck. And going to a good i7 (Sandy bridge of course) set up would undoubtedly cost me double what the graphic card and 3rd monitor would cost me... So my question really is... Would my processor and co. hinder my new graphics card ridiculously or would it be fine until I could raise the funds for the i7 upgrade?

Should be fine until you upgrade... Honestly running at 3x1080p you will run into a single 6950s limits faster then the cpu's

TripleHead2Go= $300
6950 2 gb (w/ more performance than 4890 xfire)= $265
4890 xfire= sells for ~$160-200

It doesn't make any sense to go with TH2G. You're spending more money for less performance, plus you can offset the cost of the video card by selling your old ones. These prices were put together with a quick look at newegg.com, but I think it would be a similar story in pounds, as well.

Cheers for the advice everyone. Defo gonna go for the single 6950 2GB right now... any idea where I could sell my 4890s and actually get a decent price? I paid £150+(about $240) For them so the idea of selling then for anything less than £100 hurts me even if it is a year on... I mean one's a black edition and one's a XXX edition. Surely I could get a decent price? somewhere?

Well I know you guys pay a good amount more for hardware over there, so the used market over there would also fetch you more money than selling to an american. Try craigslist or something similar.
