Pentium 4 OC

Hey so I have this old 1.8 ghz P4 laying around, so Ive decided to overclock it, what do you think a safe voltage would be, I might also overclock my 2.4 ghz P4 too, what is a safe voltage for that as well.

hmmm so on my P4's i could only get the 1.8ghz P4 to 2.0ghz, and the 2.4ghz P4 to 2.6ghz overclock before getting the BSOD, this seems a little low to me, is this normal

In general, I say don't go past 1.4 voltage. GL OCing!

EDIT: That is just a safe voltage, can't promise what will happen if you go beyond it !

Actually from what I have been seeing that seems about right... although I don't have a p4 so I am not 100% sure but just from what I have been researching that seems to be what others are getting...

That's a 180nm Williamette. They had a stock Vcore of ~1.75V, give or take, if I recall correctly, so one would have trouble abiding by that. This isn't a 45nm CPU from 2008 here. It's going to need more than that.

The Williamette ran pretty warm (maybe not like a Prescott, but hot in general nonetheless). That will possibly be a barrier if this is using basic/stock cooling. You should be able to get a bit over 200MHz out of it, but these were the days where 1GHz overclocks were more unheard of, and depending on the motherboard and RAM, it will vary (why don't you fill us in on that?). I'd say the low 2.xGHz range is about the best you should hope for on the Williamette.

The Northwood is another story. Over ~1.7V was supposedly prone to inducing SNDS, or "Sudden Northwood Death Syndrom".

Most were stock ~1.6V-ish I think? My 2.8GHz Northwood at stock sits ~1.6V, sometimes going up to ~1.7V and sometimes as low as the high 1.4xV range. I'd say stay under ~1.65V on the Northwood for safety if that's a concern. Again, it depends on the motherboard and RAM, but also the exact specs of the CPU. What 2.4GHz model is it? What's the FSB? 533MHz or 800MHz? You'll have more luck if it's a 533MHz FSB variant and/or you have spare RAM headroom.
