windows not using all my memory

Thread Starter
So recently my netbook, the Asus 1201N, became really slow. I checked for viruses, and did some basic cleanup, but it is still very slow. When I looked in the task manager, it only showed 767MB of ram. I have 2 GB installed. In computer properties, it says that I have 2GB, but it has "767MB usable" in parenthesis.

How do I get the rest usable? Thanks

Some of the RAM is reserved for the GPU.... So probably one of the DIMMs is loose so the system only sees 1GB.

Or your chipset is limited to 1GB...
Once again...

sounds like your atom chip is allocating too much ram to graphics. try looking in the bios and see how much ram it says there. just a bit of an experiment. should be 2000mb or so. but if it shows less, you may have a bad stick (assuming its dual channel) you may try swapping the RAM cards in each slot.

atom cpus can only handle 2gb of ram, so you cannot upgrade it, however swapping slots should give us an answer to the problem.

knocking it could have bumped one of the ram sticks slightly loose. so as ducky said it may only be able to use 1gb, which it is allocating 256mb for graphics.

reseat the ram, if that doesn't work then one of the sticks is probably bad and ASUS rma should send you a replacement stick

So I just switched the two sticks. so the first stick is in the second slot, and visa versa. There is no change in performance, and the same amount of memory is showing. now, the computer locks up in regular mode, and the only way to use it is to go into safe mode(I am in the networking mode so i can go on the internet). Right now, i don't have the external CD drive, so is there a way i can run an memtest without the CD drive?
