Don't worry that's coming next with Bulldozer around the corner.

But then Intel will drop Ivy Bridge; which will have as Epic a launch as Sandy Bridge did.

so we will be forced to listen to another 5 years of "amd once beat intel in performance" from the fanbois?

Honestly, considering each card is neck-and-neck in benchmarks it's silly for either manufacturer to claim the throne when so many environmental variables (e.g. other hardware, temperature, overclocks, games) would push one card over the other in performance.
Not really, though. On this, at least, AMD is right: the Radeon HD 6990 is the faster card. At 2560x1600 it's 5% faster and at 5760x1200 it's 10% faster. Before anyone mentions 1920x1200, that's not the target resolution.

EDIT:

It shouldn't have to be mentioned, though, that both these cards are a waste of money. If you want the same performance for a lot less, you go grab a Radeon HD 6950 2GB.

That's not exactly the point the blog was trying to convey. He's saying that when AMD made a claim, they disclosed what the claim was based upon.

As has been pointed out already many times, it all depends on what the TEST SUITE is, that is being used to test these cards. It is common knowledge that some games work better with the Radeon architecture than with the GeForce, and vice versa. There is no definitive World's Fastest Graphics Card, because exactly what it is fastest at compared with its competition can never be agreed on.

The HD6990 is certainly faster in some games and the GTX590 faster in others. Again, all depends on what is being tested.

We can sit here all day throwing review scores around, but the fact of the matter is is that they'll all be different due to their differing test suites and have certain opinions on each card.

My personal opinion is that neither of these cards seem like a satisfying buy at the moment (HD6990 with its noise (although that can be rectified with liquid-cooling which one may want to do anyways with a $700 card), and the GTX590 with its tendency to explode).

Would you rather have it that AMD go out of business and Intel with its newly acquired monopoly status, charge you out of your ass for your CPUs?

I think AMD should have just poked fun and made a video where there is an explosion and the bomb squad go to find a GTX 590.. That would be awesome.

To me this just looks like poor form by a desperate company.
Well AMD did have the fastest card in the HD 5000 series, and the 5800 series did well. They may not have had the fastest single GPU card but they did sell a load of them and in the end that's what matters most. The 6900/500 series is just a small bump in performance while people wait for the next series of cards on 28nm so you really can't expect much.

But how exactly are AMD desperate? They've had more DX11 card sales than NVIDIA so I don't see how they can be a "desperate company". You just seem like one of those fanboys who cried and had their feelings hurt when AMD did the Fermi video and now they're saying "come prove it your card is faster" and it seems to be the same. It's all marketing and big talk so what does it matter?

I think NVIDIA have put a really bad price on the 590. Where a 6990 can be had for £520, the 590 is £570 which is a lot. US price may be decent but UK/EU is always ripped off. Most NVIDIA products are always priced higher than AMD here.
