intel i7 stock cooler vs. $23 "aftermarket"

Thread Starter
So I noticed some undesirable temp issues with my i7 recently. Let it be known that I had a stock CPU cooler from intel, and nothing was overclocked. I have a really good air-cooled case, and the rest of the temps in my pc were very cool.

A little dismayed I purchased a Rosewill rcx-zaio CPU fan and heatsink for $19.99 plus $2.99 for shipping. Although a pain in the neck to install (I think it was just an unlucky push pin that wouldn't snap for some reason), it dropped my temps from 60c idle to less than 40c idle. cool.gif

lol. For 20 dollars you could have bought the Cooler Master 212+ which can keep your CPU cool enough to run 4GHz.

Idle temps don't matter, it's the load temperature and noise that do it.
So sexy it Hz

Yup. The Hyper 212+ is a beast for it's price.

And yes, the load temps are what matters.

Holy jesus. 60C idle for a 2.66GHz i7? eek.gif

Even 40C is nothing to write home about. Although everyone is right and idle temps mean nothing the fact that your chip is idling so hot raises questions.

What's the ambient temperature in your room? No matter how good your case is it's only going to flow air as cool as the air in the room.

Room's 75F then expect idle and load temps to suffer. If your room temps are like mine @ a brisk 64F (started @ 61 but was playing some games with my Thermi smile.gif) then you'll see idles of 28C average and gaming loads of around 55C.
