What do you think? Help with GPU's PLease

This morning I woke up wen t to my rig and the GPU died on me. I knew it was coming just thought I would make it longer.

I had a water cooled GTX 285 1Gb. Well when the computer died I had no way to look up what should be the next card so off to Fry's I went. I ended up getting a Diamond AMD Radeon HD 6870 XOC version.

So two things one is did I do good or should I take it back?

Second I have a dual monitor setup and I can not get it to see both monitors. I don't know what the deal is so if you know fill me in.

Thanks in advance.

Oh, I didn't get the 6970 because I was told it would be a waste of money for my sig rig.

Whoever told you that is stupid. Youll have some slight CPU bottlenecking at best and mostly only in benchmarks, especially if you game with your dual monitor setup. 9550s hold up pretty well.

I hate to critique after somebody already laid out their money.. but you're asking. 6870 is kind of a questionable choice, it's one of those cards in no-mans land. It's slower than even the last generation cards (meaning 470/5870/480 are faster) and more expensive (a 5870 can be had for under the $199 Newegg Price I'm looking at for the 6870 and is faster). There's really no reason to even purchase one, imo.

My personal recommendations would be either the 560ti/570, both of which are faster than the 6870 and the latter faster than a 6970.

1. The 6870 is a good card. I would say the 6950 1GB is a much better deal for little more $$. If you could find a 6950 1GB for a similar price you should get that.
2. Install drivers, plug in the two monitors and is it doesn't work from the start try to fiddle with the CCC settings until it works.
3. Whoever told you that about the 6970 mush have been smoking something bad. Would a 6970 work better on an i7? Yes. Would a 6870 work better on an i7? Yes. Is the 9550 an underpowered CPU? Most certainly not. At full details the CPU doesn't really matter anyway as long as it has a certain minimum speed - and a 12MB L2 cache Quad certainly has it.

Okay thanks for the help. So am I correct in saying I should take this back and get something else? Or what if I was to get another 6870 and do crossfire. Keep in mind I've never had two GPU's at once.

Well you PSU can handle the power draw on another 6870... but TBH either getting a 6970 or 570 would do you well... If you plan on getting a third monitor in the future...then get the 6970...the extra vram helps pull you ahead at higher resolutions as compared to the 570...If you plan on keeping it to two monitors and wish to do two montiors only, and wish for multi gpus...then a couple of 6950 1GB versions are you best bet... two can be had for 430AR

All depends on what you want to do...

Thanks for the reply.

I know people will laugh but I only play one game ATM and that's Urban Terror. Two monitors are more than enough for me. I just want to have the best card I can for the money. If you guy's think I should go two cards I will or just get one card.

I will say this: I've had 3 GPU's that I bought one Radeon HD 4870 and then a GTX 285 and now this one. I'm not crazy about the Nividia stuff I found the drivers to be a bit crazy and the OCing a pain in the @ss compared to the ATI stuff.

So by all means you guys please tell me what your thoughts are and I'll either return this today and get something else or get another one and crossfire.

Thanks again.

This one cost me $260 before the $20MIR. So really I would like to stay at $500 or less. If I get one card I would like it to be around $300 if possible but I'm more about just getting the right thing.

I only brought up 2 GPU's because I've never had it and if it'll do better I would do it. I looked at Fry's online and they don't have the 6950 1GB that I can see.

well if you are STUCK on shopping at frys... from the budget you gave me i can recommend two gpus at that price

First is this...

http://www.frys.com/product/6522883?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

This is higher than your 300 budget...but it will allow you to do goto eyefinity if you want...

and then this...

http://www.frys.com/product/6486032?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

This one is also over you 300 budget...but Asus is a very reputable brand and when you wish to sell it in the future...the Warranty is tied to the serial number on the card...not to who registered it first... both trade blows in benchmarks...the 6970 shines at higher resolutions or when using mods that causes the VRAM in games to shoot up... But the choice is ultimately upto you

Okay I'll have a look at those. Diamond had a 6970 next to the MSI you posted as well in the store. I may also look at the 6950 if I can find one. Does it matter if it's 2GB over 1GB? I have found a couple of 2GB. Also I'm not stuck to Fry's I just have no patience and I must have it today.
