^ Different architectures u cant compare clocks.
Anyway 480 was loud as hell and alot of ppl where happy with it. Also it was a toaster along with 470/465 and alot of ppl bought it. Nowadays alot of OCNers are recommending a used gtx480 since its cheap. So in reality temps/noise is moot.
And as alot of ppl said even if it clocks to 900mhz, when ocp hits its useless. The card is limited by pci-e power (period). You want to buy a gtx590? i suggest waiting to see if non-reference designs are in the future. Or a revised edition/batch of the card.
The main concern is that even if u watercool the card, u cant get rid of ocp. As soon as the card starts consuming alot of power, ocp kicks in even if the temps are fine all over the pcb :s. So u have to disable ocp, and thus increasing ur chances of frying the vrm, even under water, aka 570s. Its just messed up really. Gtx6xx/HD7xxx series am waiting .

Edit: Also since the card takes much power, it might hurt the mobo itself. Someone with 1500 silverstone strider psu, had a 590 burnt. He didnt overclock, the guy had launch returned back turned his pc on, boom the whole thing fried and took his mobo with it. If you dont have extra power to ur pci-e slots, i suggest little to no overclock.

What is that 'ocp' you keep referring to?

Who cares about noise when gaming will drown it out? If you're gaming on a 2.1 setup with a $700 GPU, you have other priorities that need to be taken care of.

You could look at it that way, only because we're comparing the card to the 6990, which you had to bring up earlier....

Seriously though, 200mhz overclock? It's so downclocked that that overclock is putting it where it should be in the first place(Minus the ungodly power consumption, but hey, 2 580's for ya right?).

And i'm on Green team right now, NO fanboy here. I love my card, but i'm not going around defending every 590 thread, when nVidia is at fault for a ****ty power system that can barely handle severely downclocked cores, much less the standard 770+ core that the card should have.

Thanks, Squirrel. Now i don't have to address that.
Wow are you serious? 60% better overclock. Please shows us proof of this overclock

Right, because we all know the 6990 gets a 60% better overclock lmaol

The 6990 @ 1000Mhz has a 20% overclock, where the GTX 590 @ 789Mhz would have a 30% overclock and most 6990s have issues going past 950Mhz

Surprised the VRMs didn't pop, though... considering Sweclockers blew theirs at 1.025v.

you all seriously need to just drop the 590 vs 6990 debate. how many threads are you going to garbage up with these post and get closed? chill out and for the love of God stop comparing clock to clock speed like that matters. if the 590 overclocks 200mhz and is equal to 580 sli then it will be worth the price. noone should be using autofan with stock reference cooling(even linus was a fool for that) and we already have proof of good stable clocks with watercooling so far(thanks to mask). lets just leave it at that for right now. i'm not trying to be an ass but it's getting nowhere. just agree to disagree and leave the jabs at each other alone.

can anyone tell me how often OCP will actually kick in while gaming and not benchmarking? that should be the next question to get answered.

Did you like, skim my post... or what? Or can you read? And are you capable of distinguishing between comparisons and or literacy?

Your lack of sense and anything positively mind related is very startling.

Ignorance & incompetence, what a terrible, terrible combination.

Done with the thread for good.

This thread is about the GTX 590 overclock and who is comparing clock for clock?

The GTX 590 @ 607 performs the same as a 6990 @ 830Mhz. You can't compare clock for clock.

I'm just saying that for the price and if you take into account the overclock potential, the GTX 590 is the better card. Not to mention the noise of the 6990
