System specs:

+1 to you, sir.

See, THIS, is good information...It tells you BF3 on the 280.19 is only actually utilizing 1 core while the 2nd idles...Again, that is a Beta driver so, I wouldn't expect a miracle but, that's solid info.

I'm honestly still using 275.33 at the moment...And on 1 card, (after Ragin's Bios "tweak") I'm seeing 80-90fps.

Will try the new WHQL a bit later and let you all know how it goes.

Just for future ref, alpha/beta with beta drivers, doesn't typically end well unless you tweak them a bit for yourself...The profiles aren't 100% and if you SLI, it's going to present some issues.

That would be SLI Profile probably missing. Try renaming the .exe to match Bad Company 2, but I don't believe that will work anymore, the SLI Profiles are activated by Windows Memory ID / Process ID too now, so simply renaming things isn't expected to always work. Expect FPS 50% more with the second GPU working... and optimized drivers.

@All
The VRMs on the 590, are better quality than the 570, and although different than the exact 580 VRMs, they are of equal performance (they aren't cheap.)

The maximum number of VRMs controls the maximum safe voltage, clean power delivery, and power stability. The "blowing up" factor can easily be done on ANY card over volted too high. The BIOS should never allow a maximum voltage that exceeds the VRM capacity's "safe zone." It is my firm belief that 5 VRMs support a 1.063v load, and are still within the safe zone, provided adequate cooling.

Keep in mind guys that setting 1.05v is the maximum, because the second GPU's VRMs gets an over volt of 13mV, so the second GPU gets 1.063v

Also note, the maximum overclocks are all lower, because the Drivers added an additional 13mV to the numbers but its not really there.

0.925 = 0.913v
1.050 = 1.038v

This is why maximum overclocks are lower than 267.85. Its not the only reason. With more GPU usage (full load) through optimized drivers, it draws more current/being stressed even more, so a higher overclock while obtainable on 267.85 was nearly as beneficial as some of these lower overclocks on 280.19.

Ex: 50% GPU usage @ 830 MHz, vs 85% GPU usage @ 775 MHz, The 775 MHz is a great deal faster simply because of the higher GPU usage.

Regarding the other V word: VRAM, VRAM usage is entirely dependent on the game.
DiRT 3 can run at 5760x1080 with 8xAA with 70 fps and uses 1350 MB VRAM at maximum.

Dragon Age II can run at 1920x1080 with 8xAA with 40 FPS and uses 1450 MB VRAM with all the textures and eye candy enabled.... which its horribly coded.

Crysis I is the same, and lower AA, about 2xAA, and you get 50 FPS and uses 1520 MB of VRAM (so as much as you have.) Crysis 2, does the exact same thing, only its quite playable at 5760x1080. I would anticipate that 1500 MB was the sweet spot, but because of competition and people moaning, a second gen 580 was released for 3GB which is super overkill in a majority of games at every resolution save 7680x1600, and that has to have 4x/8x AA to get up in the upper 2500MB.

nVidia drivers don't use conservative VRAM usage techniques. It pre-caches a lot of stuff into memory, like textures. This how you see Crysis 2 and other titles at 2000+ MB of VRAM at 1920x1200 and stupidly low resolutions (for the VRAM usage). ITS JUST CACHING STUFF TO MEMORY. In my opinion I like that, if you have it might as well use it in my opinion. ITS NOT MANDATORY. Its like having 24GB RAM instead of 12GB. You will use up to 12GB in Photoshop at a workstation doing high-res picture editing, but it doesn't give you much room for caching (slowing down loading or letting texture/colors pop-in in for example) so adding 12 GB of RAM doesn't improve the speed at all, as 12 GB was sufficient, BUT it will improve things like pop-in reduction or faster loading times, etc. This analogy directly translates to games. It doesn't slow the rendering down at all, thats entirely in the realm of the cards capabilities.

However, that being said, some games are poorly coded or simply place huge demand on video memory, or both. Its entirely game dependent.

Thanks. I was on 280.19 simply because Nvidia recommended it as best for the BF3 Alpha....lol!

Thanks for all the good work you guys do over at Alienware. Despite what all the haters say, I couldnt be happier with my R3...Powerful and priced great. I really couldnt justify doing my own build with pricing coming out how it did (with my negotiated price) and getting the warranty I did (5yr).

My only true concerns with the system is if the 875W PSU is truly adequate under all types of loads with the 590, and that the 590 dumps all the hot air off GPU B into the case causing the card to run hotter than i'd prefer. I've toyed with the idea of water cooling it but hey...thats what the 5yr is for!

I figured as much. I'd give it a try but the Alphas closed now for like 2 weeks no? Unless you know a way in that I dont...

This, for your situation, Gawain, is true.

We get updates, profiles etc, as a package and because of the way BF3 "Alpha/open alpha" went down, you may not actually have the SLI profile, I didn't even think about that...Cain gets a +1 as well.

If you have any idea how to mess with drivers, you can actually "force" your own SLI profile...I believe that's what the last "update" did because I know some 580's were experiencing some issues as well.

Our office is a bit different in that we have no real "link" to the retail world, or actually most of the company (I thank god for that) but, thanks much...If you ever have an issue with it, feel free to beam me a PM and I can put your exact machine together, we'll have a go at your problem.

@Cain, in your opinion, do you foresee SLI profiles being enabled when "surround" is actually in use?

They seem to be dodging that question quite well so, figured I'd "toss the ball" around with someone else...See what your opinion is.

Sorry I didn't know Alpha was down, I never get invited to anything... otherwise they would have to actually do their jobs and fix bugs or I would take their jobs

You can always try messing with the hex bits with nVidia Inspector. I even suspect 280.26 may have added BF3 profile.

No actually I wouldn't expect activating Surround by default being greater in performance or adding GPU usage.... at least if there is no SLI Profile at all (no entry for the title). Usually if the SLI Profile isn't there, nothing else is there for the game and its standard run of the mill GPU usage due to driver team priority (although this isn't always the case explained below.) Think of it like default mode. No performance optimizations, no tweaks, just brute force GPU usage. Sometimes even GPU usage is only 40% because its just not told to use more (theory).

However, sometimes SLI Profiles have a bug, and have been disabled, while Surround may be fully operational. Usually if SLI Profile is just NOT there, there is no Surround as that is secondary to SLI.

Priority of Driver Team (By Observation):
Physical Install & Software Errors
Single GPU Bugs & Glitches
Single GPU Game Profile Optimization - Quality vs. Perfromance -> Finding the perfect combo balance to render the specific game engine.

AS OF NOW: 3D Vision is high on the totem pole, second only to standard single gpu & single monitor.

SLI Compatibility <- 99% Possible, 1% they don't care/can't be done titles like Minecraft, Sims 3 etc.
SLI Bugs & Issues <- Anything acknowledged by nVidia will be fixed, everything else: No Guarantees

2D Surround Compatibility <- If Possible NOT guaranteed
2D Surround Bugs & Issues <- Not much support for older titles, at the mercy for users submissions (no active QA it seems.)

3D Surround Compatibility <- Rising in popularity, thus more man hours required.
3D Surround Bugs & Issues <- Not many users have this setup, its supported, most issues seem to be either just 3D or just Surround, again, would be at the mercy for user submssions but also does have active QA on this.

This is the trickle down concept and it makes sense. 3D is the only one I don't use, nor do I like because it steals QA/Bug Attention from technologies I do use, and it does no benefit except only to people who use 3D Vision. See if someone uses a single GPU, and I use SLI, and they fix an issue where the performance was lower on one card, often times that same bug was in SLI, and that same bug is also fixed, which means that improved performance in single GPU, usually means more performance in SLI etc. Its not always the case, but it makes sense.

So with that in mind, the priorities are there, and sometimes they skip a task or bug, or different teams work on different priorities or even just different bugs at the same priority level. Hence a driver release might fix the 3D Profile for a game, but no 2D Surround issues were adjusted. Or 3D Surround Compatibility was added, but there are 2D Surround issues still for example. So SLI maybe broken disabled a driver release, and 2D Surround is fully operational.

Thats how they come back with with these 87% improvement in Dragon Age II in SLI 580s for example. No der Sherlock, you had SLI crippled. Like Chris Rock said: "They be braggin about **** they SUPPOSED to do."

Benchmarks of the Mars II are available now!
http://www.overclock.net/hardware-ne...mers-mars.html

Mars II - 100%
GTX 590 - 86.86%
6990 - 86.68

6990 doesn't seem to be the world's fastest anymore.

What's the highest OC that anyone has achieved on a 590 so far?

Anyone get close to 782?

TiN and I.

TiN has LN2 up to 1300 MHz with a single 590 card + mods.

After that its me on H20 with 830 MHz on all 590 SLI thats on HwBot, non-HWBot is 875 MHz in Metro2033 benchmark, with 870 MHz + Proof. I don't think I have a 875 MHz screenshot.

Its not just GPU though, we have a 400 MHz underclock on memoriez Most we can do is close the gap to about 200 MHz underclock.
