The real world difference between the x16, x6, x4 slots is 4% on a dual GPU...On a single it's 3%...There is hardly ANY reason in the world to require that his card be in the x16 slot.

On the SB motherboards it's x16 TOTAL. So if he has 2 cards, the X16 becomes x8, x8.

So for example, I have a GTX 590, a GTX 580 and a Fatal1ty...So, in reality my actual lane usage is x16/3 or 5.3_ ~

I do agree that it's configured incorrectly...The card will just exhaust hot air back into the case and it's being repeatedly recycled rather than exhausting/intaking fresh air.

There is no "venting" properly and what you suggest will raise the heat exposure of the 2nd core.

The front/back blow-back on the 590 is because it runs fresh air over BOTH cores...By blocking 1, you're essentially overheating the other so, no...That's not smart either.

My suggestion would be to get more ventilation without blocking the exhaust because if you go to bench that card and it's blocked...You're performance will half-life.

You're saying I'm giving misinformation but then agreeing with me that there is, in fact, a difference. A small one to be sure, but it exists. I'm not sure where the argument is here, if the reason he wants to put the card in the x8 is because he thinks it will help with cooling when the sound card has nothing to do with the cooling problem, nor will adding fans to the drive bay help it any if the 590 can't exhaust properly. Also, I was talking about blocking a small strip of the fan under the card not the card vent itself, sorry if I didn't make that clear. The intent was to keep the 181 from blowing the 590's exhaust right back into it, not block the exhaust entirely.

3-4% in reality is not a difference worth having a discussion over...Genuinely.

Yes, an infinitely small percentile of a difference exists, again, to the community, and in real world apps, it's negligible.

He can put that card wherever in god's name he wants, it is a 4% real world difference which is not going to make a lick of difference in BF3 due to the fact he doesn't have AA maxed.

So, again, in real world usage, no, there is no difference in slot choice...In benching, there is only because 3dMark and other benches test their tessellation engines which, 3-4% again, is not a real world usage difference.

If he games, nothing will change...No performance difference.

My agreeing with you is that his case is not properly vented and that, it's honestly a bad case for this hardware.

I personally believe there are some better options out there, to the extent I'd almost reccomend he games with the side of the case off.

That doesn't change the fact that he can literally drop the card in any slot and get absolutely the same gaming performance that he had in the X16.

HI Masked / Scorpion,

Right then, have moved the card to the 8x slot so now the vapour chamber exhuasts on to the centre of the fan which is about 50mm and have been playing BF3 all night and after setting up the custom fan profile in MSI Afterburner the cards have NOT gone above 70C. On average the one GPU is about 2C more than the other but both show the same max, also for the first time both GPUs are showing the same load now maxing at 99% where as before one was always considerably less? Could it of been shutting down due to the heat?

I have plus repped you both as have used info from both of you.

For anyone reading this conversation, I checked reviews for the best reviewed components I could afford but didn't check compatibility!!! Working now though so thanks for the help!

I trust these temperatures are more acceptable! thumb.gif

70*C is much better than 86*C before. So allowing the card to vent at the bottom worked? Nice of them to put a dead spot in the fan there. Glad it worked out for you.

i got myself a Raven RV02e as well.

despite that this casing put the GTX590 in an awkward position where hot exhaust air is against inflow, there still seem to be a good deal of cooling inside this particular casing. once i complete my modding and port over the entire system, i will post temps.

MrHongKongDave,
care to share how your PC casing interior looks like? would like to see how your GTX590 is located inside there. thumb.gif

I pulled this out of his profile.

Guys... my RMA 590 is different. My water block doesn't fit. I genuinely don't know what to do.

Ugh. Just when I thought I'd have my rig back together...

I know I can do a workaround that would fit with the vram and all, but the cores would be out of direct contact. I could use the pink pad everywhere else (1mm vs .5mm) and then use only paste on the inductors(?). But I'm out of paste.
