They were, very unhappy right now so I guess you can make me a former member as EVGA is happily going to replace my video card, but then its going on ebay. I am going to throw back in my dual 6970's.

@ rush: I see your x6 is only at 3.5 ghz...could this be a bottleneck were looking at here? We are essentially running sli on this thing and its trying to get info from your cpu as fast as possible. The higher you clock your cards the faster your processor needs to be. Just wondering if that could be the culprit before we blame the ocp. Might wanna try to OC your cpu close to 4ghz and try to tests over again.

From a "life long" AMD user, I have never 0% GPU in any situation outside of driver issues. But given the drivers work fine at 550MHz AND stock we have to rule those out...

I am not trying to start anything here, but it really seems like OCP.
JCPUser, did you read what I wrote under that graph. The 0% utilization was the loading screens between tests..... its the dips to 60-40% that is the throttling.

Twilex, I can try pushing my x6 further... but I seriously doubt that is holding me back. The reason I am at 3.5 ghz is because thats how far I can run stable at stock voltage..... fairly impressive if I do say so myself.

Yea im thinking its ocp but it can still be a possibly that needs to be ruled out. I havent run vantage in a while so im not sure how cpu intensive it is.

I would say it was a good start, and I didn't mean to come off sounding like I didn't believe you. I just didn't see what you are saying.

CPU Utilization won't drop it down 40%, maybe 80~85% from 3.5GHz to 99% at 4.0 GHz at the most. I see the same type of thing in various video games on my current cards due to drivers.

This is what I was referring to as what is throttling, the GPU usage. Although there are plenty of low Fermi GPU usage causes, OCP being one of them (but less prominent as it exists on cards without OCP.) If at stock there is 99% usage over all tests, then I would say either the OC doesn't have enough volts, driver problem, then a benchmark compatibility problem, then I would think OCP if all others have been ruled out. I have done various gaming tests with OCP on and off, and the GPU usage often gets throttled about 50% of my games, and every new release Crysis 2 included, has the issue till drivers come out to fix it.

Now thats a two fold problem identifying what the problem is, as the drivers might be actually fixing stuff/profiles or there is heavy OCP coding tweaks going on.

World of Warcraft and Homefront didn't ever go above 30%. It sucks because I want 120 FPS minimum at all times (monitor.) Thats entirely driver related to me. When the 580s first came I had low GPU usage in everything except Unigine Heaven and 3DMark 11, which are not the most fun games to play smile.gif

Sorry I missed that tongue.gif

I guess I could be the Phenom then -- that is a reasonable point. Really dunno about drivers or benchmark compat issues as the lower clocks are OK. Could need more voltage... I have seen OCs where at the same clocks increasing the voltage increased the score.

Anyway, I tried to help identify the problem with a simple test and added my 2 cents. But -- as I am just a measly 570 owner, I will leave you guys to your thread. tongue.gif

Cheers.

Power (watts) = Resistance (volts) * Current (amps)

When more watts is needed to run a heavier load one of those two variables on the right need to increase. Either the volts or the amps. From what I am seeing on my card the volts remain mostly constant, which is desirable. That means the amp's are increasing to meet demand. Well I am guessing that the amps supplied or the volt increase to meet demand is being limited.

It is possible to keep the same clock speed without meeting the watts demand. And the result is artifacts and BSOD's, but if the parts are built to be used with low volts (underclocking) then they might be able to do fine....

This is somewhat speculation as I do not have access to the coding for nvidias proprietary hardware/software. I am just going to wait it out and see how stable they can make it with newer drivers then I will push my luck in the overclocking front.

edit: I am curious to see how that LN2 turns out.... I will be keeping tabs, thanks for posting.

ocp controls the current(over current protection) and not the volts. seems the card is being heavily aggressive on current draw.
